In the semis, the Moose Jaw Central Cyclones defeated the Melfort Comets 63-60 in overtime as Kim Lowe scored 14, Crystal Dreger 11, Tianna Adams 10, including 7 in overtime, Kari Fast 10, Nicola Nicholls 8, Carly Gummeson, Brea-Anne Urquhart 2 and Shara Richmond 2. Lesley Frier paced the Comets with 16. Erin Hantke added 13, Lauren Frier 13, Jana Prete 8, Lindsay Anderson 4, Janine McImgren 2, Nikki Welygan 2 and Nicole Dancey 2.
In the other semi, the Caronport Cougars pounded the Moose Jaw Riverview Royals 70-43 as Erica Anderson scored 14, Sara Thiessen 13, Jennifer Aberhart 10, Stefani Balison 8, Valerie Schultz 7, Rebekah Lawson 6, Jaime Houser 6, Jodi Magee 4 and Elisa Hordyk 2. Caronport led 17-2 early, 40-22 at the half and by as many as 32. Cougars coach Nelson Duerkson told the Regina Leader-Post that the early lead “stopped my heart from beating so hard. It’s easier to concentrated when you have a lead.” Thiessen said “we were all nervous because this was our first trip to provincials. Once the game started, we were all fine. We came out and played strong. We didn’t want to give them a chance to get into it.” Terri Lynn Sullivan paced the Royals with 11. Jeannette Riley added 8, Carly Spencer 6, Jackie Herchuk 6, Tamara Herchuk 5, Melanie Patoine 4, Nastasha Mang 4 and Kim Forsyth 1. Royals coach Rick Schwabe said “both teams were nervous and jittery. I thought the first team to get a couple of baskets would settle down. It was them and they took it to us.”
In the bronze medal match, the Melfort Comets blasted the Moose Jaw Riverview Royals 64-47 as Nicole Dancey scored 15, Lesley Frier 11, Jana Prete 8, Lauren Frier 8, Erin Hantke 7, Lindsay Anderson 6, Nikki Welygan 6 and Janine Walmgren 3. Melanie Patoine paced the Royals (coached by Rick Schwabe) with 24. Carly Spencer added 14, Terri Lynn Sullivan 5 and Jackie Herchuk 4.
In the final, the Moose Jaw Central Lady Cyclones defeated the Caronport Cougars 55-39 to capture their fourth straight provincial title. It was the fifth consecutive time the Cyclones had made the final. Caronport went 1-10 in the Moose Jaw city league but under 19-year-old coach Nelson Duerkson improved dramatically in the latter half of the season and caught fire in postseason. Tianna Adams led Moose Jaw Central with 15. Crystal Dreger added 10, Kari Fisct 10, Nicole Nicholls 8, Kara Templeton 6, Carly Gummerson 4 and Sara Richmond 2. Fisct, a transfer from Wilcox Athol Murray, told the Regina Leader-Post that “I wanted to go where I knew they could help improve my basketball. It’s been a dream of mine to win a title since I started playing basketball. As soon as the buzzer sounded, I started crying. It was important for the school and the team to make it four in a row, and to make it my first.” Cyclones coach Bryan Adams said “I don’t think the excitement ever wears off. Every year is a new year.” Jennifer Aberhart and Valerie Schultz each scored 10 for the Cougars. Sara Thiessen added 6, Erica Anderson 5, Stefani Balison 2, Elisa Hordyk 2, Jaime House 2 and Rebekah Lawson 2. The Cougars were coached by 19-year-old Nelson Duerkson, who assumed the helm before Christian when Jodi Hall left to have a baby. Assistant Vi Thiessen told the Regina Leader-Post that “he’s just a kid and he’s done amazing things with them. We’ve blossomed under him. We haven’t won a title since 1979 and that was before these girls were born.” Duerkson said “I just developed and added to what she (Hall) had. It was easy. They listened to me as long as I showed respect to them. They gained a lot of confidence. There’s a lot of difference when you know you can score and when you wish you can score; there’s a lot of difference when you expect to win and hope you win.”
