In the semis, the Moose Jaw Central Cyclones dispatched the Humboldt Mohawks 71-66 as Shane Sowden scored 25, Jason Cornish 21, Vishal Sesena 7, Brad Bowler 6, Trevor Snell 2 and Don Cornish 2. Sowden shattered a backboard with a dunk during warm-ups. Keith Hauser paced the Mohawks with 17. David Lieffers added 14, Jamie Benson 11, Kevin Leuschen 9, Daniel Codling 6, Andrew Ford 6 and Jon Novecosky 3.
In the other semi, the Caronport Cougars defeated the Balgonie Greenall Griffins 67-52 as Ben Prangnell scored 17, Chris Mead 15, Gene Wolverton 12, Geoff Glaspell 8, Chad Romanuk 7, Mark Josefson 6 and Dean Dueck 2. Jason Danyliw paced the Griffins with 18. Ryan Unique added 9, Ryan Campbell 7, Trevor Kiel 6, Dion Petford 4, Trevor Schoereth 3, Kevin Wesolowski 3 and Dan Paysen 2.
In the bronze medal match, the Humboldt Mohawks clipped the Balgonie Greenall Griffins 63-45 as Andrew Ford scored 16, Daniel Codling 13, Keith Hauser 12, Kevin Leuschen 7, Jamie Benson 4, David Lieffers 4, Jon Novecosky 4 and Martin Bergerman 3. Trevor Schoenroth led the Griffins with 15. Jason Danyliw added 10, Trevor Kiel 8, Ryan Unique 3, Kevin Wesolowski 2, Curtis Machmer 2, Jared Woloshyn 2, Chad McFarlane 2 and Dion Potford 1.
In the final, the Moose Jaw Central Cyclones defeated the Caronport Cougars 84-70 to cap a (17-3) second half of the season. They earlier won the Moose Jaw championship by 2g-1 over the Cougars. The Cyclones controlled the game from the start, although star forward Shane Sowden fouled out with six minutes to play. Jason Cornish paced Moose Jaw Central with 26. Shane Sowden added 23, Brad Smith 15, Don Cornish 9, Brad Bowler 6, Greg Roffey 2 and Vishal Sesena 2. Bowler told the Regina Leader-Post that the team had an attitude adjustment “midseason when they suffering through the doldrums of an 11-9 campaign. “We had the attitude that losing was acceptable. After that coach (Ryan Boughen) would not accept anything but winning. We got that swagger you need to win.” Snowden said “we did it when it counts – in March.” Boughen, a rookie coach, said “I guess you could say it was a transition year for the guys. I was a new face and they had to adopt to me. We didn’t come together until the end. We did bloom a little late but that’s the best time to do it.” Geoff Glasspell led Caronport with 36. Gene Wolverton added 20, Ben Prangnell 5, Dan Dueck 2, Chris Mead 2, Chad Romanuk 2, Mark Josefson 2 and Brendan Johnson 1. Cougars coach Gib Hinz said “it’s a big court and it took a lot out of us to get back. We tied it, looked in good position and then the wheels fell off … This is the eighth time we’ve played Central this year. I told the kids they know Central’s game as well as they know their mothers. There were no surprises. It came down to who would play the hardest. We ran out of gas down the end.”
