In the South playoffs: …………………………………………………… In the first qualifier, the Caronport Cougars nipped the Weyburn Eagles 71-70. …………………………………………………… In the second qualifier, the Weyburn Eagles eliminated the Regina Scott Blues 81-71. The Blues (coached by Dick Folk) included Rob Pelletier, Garland Koch, Pat Carr, Quinn Stone, Rob Yates, Terry Hollinger.
In the provincial semis, the Caronport Cougars clubbed the Tisdale Tornados 71-48 as Graham Beatty scored 25 and Cam Enns 11. Perry Ostropowich led the Tornados with 17. Clint Holden added 14.
In the other semi, the Weyburn Composite Eagles clipped the Melfort Comets 58-46 as Darren Ferrier scored 16 and Darren Haupstein 16. Bill Glanville led the Comets with 14. Todd Degelman added 12.
In the bronze medal match, the Melfort Comets edged the Tisdale Tornados 56-51 as Todd Degelman scored 18 and Bill Glanville 17. Clint Holden paced the Tornados with 22. Kelly Broman added 13. The Tornados also included Perry Ostropowich.
In the final, the Caronport Cougars edged Weyburn Eagles 56-52 as Rick Peters scored 18, Grover Bradford 10 and Cam Enns 10. Darren Ferrier led the Eagles with 20. Darren Haupstein added 11. Steve Grebe hit a 15-foot jumper to ice the win for the Cougars, hit only points of the game. Grebe told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix that “I just took the shot and hoped it would drop. It kind of stayed up there on the rim a bit but it finally went in.” Cougars coach Timothy Herr said “there’s no kid that’s going to work harder than (Grebe) consistently. It’s kind of ironic that a guy who works so hard on defence comes through by making a big shot with only 15 seconds left to ice it for us.”
