Hayden Alcrow paced the Voyageurs with 30. Cal Rediron added 13 and Walter Hood 9. “It was a good win. We’ve been to Hoopla before so we knew what to expect,” Colts post Colton Thurlow told the Moose Jaw Times-Herald. “We were a little off, but we ended up getting the win.” The Colts built an early 11-point lead on Thurlow’s post play and the attacks of Brady Resch. But the Voyageurs began draining treys and rallied to within 36-28 at the half. Beauval opened the second half with a 16-2 run to take a 44-38 lead. “The boys played unreal. We had a slow start, but we won the second and third quarter. We just couldn’t finish it in the fourth,” said Voyageurs coach Ryan Day. “It was a really strong effort, led by our team leaders — Cal Rediron, Kody Couillonneur and Hayden Alcrow — they all really stepped up and played a heck of a game. I just wish we had pulled through.” The Voyageurs hit 14 treys on the night. Colts’ Grade 9 guard Mekhi Rousseau scored his only points of the game — and hit the Colts’ only trey of the second half — to put them ahead by five with 3:21 left. ”He’s a good little shooter. He’s quick. It was a good time for him to pull out a three,” Thurlow said. Alcrow got Beauval back to within two with 1:03 left, but the Colts hung on for the win. “It was crazy because we upset the number one seeded team to get here. It was a hard journey, but it was fun though,” said Alcrow. “It’s been our goal for four years and now that we’re here, we’re just trying to live in the moment.” Hood said “this is my last year and (the loss) was heart-breaking. I was mad after the game, but I felt like I did everything I can. I’m very proud of this team.
In the other semi, the 2nd-seeded Davidson Raiders nipped the 6th-seeded Outlook Lutheran Collegiate Bible Institute Bisons 73-71 as Huck Rettger hit a runner in the final minute of play. The Raiders led 38-35 at the half. Gabe Ebenal paced the Raiders with 25. Josh Bowey paced the Bisons with 23. Raiders coach Kim Rettger said his troops struggled with the Bisons “smothering defence” and were hurt by an injury to Andrew Read, who broke his ankle in the second quarter while battling for a rebound. Ebenal “was the guy that put us over the top. He just shot the lights out.”
In the bronze medal match, the 8th-seeded Beauval Valley View Voyageurs whipped the the 6th-seeded Outlook Lutheran Collegiate Bible Institute Bisons 59-41 after leading 32-18 at the half. Cal Rediron led the Voyageurs with 17. Josh Bowey led the Bisons with 16. The Bisons (coach Jesse Sorenson, coach Cliff Adelman, manager John Baier) also included Travis Molzan, Andreas Graupe, Daniel Bratvold, Matthew Kemp, David Baier, Joshua Clark, Jacob Lentz, Dexter Deugau, Chad Blumenshein and Morgan Millham.
In the final, the 2nd-seeded Davidson Raiders defeated the 4th-seeded Coronach Colts 67-61 as Huck Rettger scored 36. “It was the most pure and perfect team effort that I’ve ever been part of,” Raiders coach Kim Rettger told the Davidson Leader. “Every kid just busted their arse. . . It was just electric in that gym on Saturday.” Rettger “just was pulling shots from all over the court . . . He was something to watch.” The Raiders led by 24 in the first half and by 37-23 at the break. Though Parker Smith was sidelined by a concussion in the second half, Rettger said his troops pulled out the win through determination. “You could never question their effort.” Brady Resch led the Colts with 23. “We were down 24 at one point, so we battled back to get within two, so there were no quitters on the team, everybody worked hard right to the end and never gave up and that’s all you can ask for,” Colts coach Belinda Spagrud told DiscoverMooseJaw.com. “This is our third trip to Hoopla, so now we’ve got a bronze, gold and now a silver, we’ve got the whole collection. After being here the last couple of years, we weren’t certain that we would get here for a third time and so just to get here made us happy and thrilled. Everybody sets your goal to get to Hoopla, but we didn’t expect to get here this year, so we’re happy with our outcome. When we were within two, it was pretty exciting. We have a grade 9 who’s not five-feet tall, but he scored 11 points, so we’re excited for him too because he’s a hard worker and never gives up, so that’s what I’ll take away from this game.” Colt Brady Resch told the Moose Jaw Times-Herald that “we knew that we had to play good and that they were ranked above for us a good reason as they have a very good team. They had us down deep and we had gotten into foul trouble early so that played a big factor into our early struggles. We all knew that he had to keep playing and that we couldn’t quit. We found the lanes and got to the basket to make it close. They came out champions though and it was good game all around to be a part of.” Huck Rettger said “to help the school win their first title in my last year here is the best feeling ever. We came out strong with a lot of energy and were shooting the lights out for a while. When they started to come back, we were pretty much tired out but we needed to dig deep and trust the offence. That’s what got us here.” Resch, who scored 20 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter, said “you’re just trying to do whatever you can to help the team at that point. There’s nothing better than being at a Hoopla and I wanted to try and finish out my high school career on a winning note.”
