In the final, the Denzil Sacred Heart Devils defeated the Wishart Marauders 98-78 as 6-3 guard Fred Leibel scored 50. The Devils quickly took a double-digit lead and never looked back. The Devils led by 10 at the half. “We didn’t play very well,” coach Doug English told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix. “But there’s a certain pride that comes with winning the first title. We’ll look back at that and remember this year fondly.” English added that Leibel “doesn’t seem to realize that (he’s in grade 10). He shouldn’t be as good as he is for such a young guy.” Leibel said it’s a function of practice. “On a free day in the summer, I’ll be outside sometimes for four hours a day, working on my shot. I’ve been to YAS camp in Saskatoon, one at Brandon University, Rocky Mountain House at Alberta, two at the U of S, and Meadow Lake. This summer, I’ll drive into Saskatoon twice a week for practices (with the provincial team). It’s about a two-and-a-half hour drive, but it’ll be worth it. … We don’t want to be considered just a good small-town team. We want to be known as a good team,” he said. “When I come up against good competition, I try to step up my game. You’ve got to take those chances when they’re in front of you.” Payden McDougall led the Marauders with 25.
