In the provincial quarterfinals, the 3rd-seeded Regina Winston Knoll Wolverines defeated the 6th-seeded Weyburn Eagles 60-44. Wolverines coach Amy Mickleborough told the Regina Leader-Post that she wasn’t too pleased. “We had a terrible game, absolutely terrible. I’m thankful we had a game where we could get the jitters out. Weyburn really came out fearless, really aggressive. We turned the ball over a lot and couldn’t find the hoop. We really didn’t play until the last two or three minutes of the game.” Leah Anderson led the Wolverines with 23. Sarah Singer added 18. Trina Delanoy led Weyburn with 13.

In the other quarterfinal, the 4th-seeded Moose Jaw A.E. Peacock Toilers dumped the 5th-seeded host Saskatoon Evan Hardy Souls 75-38. “Anytime a team can play on their own floor in a big game like this it should be an advantage for them,” Toilers coach Lindee Ziefflie told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix. “They’re familiar with everything, while it’s all new to us. I was hoping we could establish ourselves right away because if they got off to a big start, got the fans behind them, it could have meant trouble.” Hardy coach Maureen Howey said last few minutes of the first half was the Souls’ downfall. “We were playing even with them and then we lost our composure. We knew that Peacock’s pressure could cause some problems and it rattled us. Once it got started, we couldn’t stop it.” An eight-point Peacock lead with seven minutes left in the opening frame ballooned to a 37-20 half-time advantage. Pam Gottselig led the Toilers with 23. Erin Carduner paced the Souls with 11. The Souls (coached by Maureen Howey, assisted by Kelly McPhee, Lauren Evans and Nicole Poier) also included Shaina Swidrovich, Robyn Howey, Kara Rathie, Stephanie Classen, Lauren Faris, Joni Gullacher, Coralee Klassen, Jen Kohlenberg, Kristi Pavelich, Chelsea Ratslaff, Heather Shepherd, Tracy Gordon, Tami Turner, Linda Walter.

In the semis, the 3rd-seeded Regina Winston Knoll Wolverines, making their first Hoopla appearance in the school’s 4-year history, stunned the 2nd-seeded Saskatoon Holy Cross Crusaders 78-62 as Sarah Singer scored 17. “Our defence played a lot better and our whole offence starts off of that,” coach Amy Mickleborough told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix. “We weren’t very consistent in the first half, it was up-down, up- down. We’d be up eight, let it back to two and then go back up eight or 10. We played an entire half in the second.” Crusaders post Ashlea Barrington, who scored 26, credited Knoll’s defence for the win. “Our passing wasn’t great and they looked for that. They got a lot of their points that way. They’re a real good team and they deserved to win tonight.”

In the other semi, the top-seeded Regina city champion Balfour Redmen defeated the 4th-seeded Moose Jaw A.E. Peacock Toilers 83-75 as Lara Schmidt scored 34 and Jana Schweitzer 30. Daphne Gottselig led Peacock with 22. “We know we’re going to have to work very hard to be successful,” Balfour coach Wendy Bileski told the Regina Leader-Post. “When you get to this level of competition, everyone has to be ready to play.”

In the bronze medal match, the Moose Jaw A.E. Peacock Toilers defeated the Saskatoon Holy Cross Crusaders 72-55 as Amber Beer and Alison Kirkpatrick each scored 16. Jill Stein led Holy Cross with 14. The Crusaders (coached by Sharon Klein) also included Ashlea Barrington, Claire Anderson, Angie Vangool, Crystal Korol, Claire Soulodre, Kimberly Nisbet, Chrystal Mantyka, Lauren Moker, Jen Roy, Kristi Wist, Sarah Boehm, Erin Nordick.

In the final, the 3rd-seeded Regina Winston Knoll Wolverines stunned the top-seeded Regina Balfour Redmen 71-68 to win the school’s first provincial title. “It just caps off the year,” Wolverines coach Amy Mickleborough told the Regina Leader-Post. “It was great. I’m just so excited that I can’t explain it. Our grade 12s were in grade 9 when the school opened. Our core group has been here from the start. That makes it even more special.” The Wolverines avenged a 67-63 loss to Balfour in the Regina city final and ended Balfour’s hopes of threepeat. “Before the game, one of our girls said, ‘it’s our turn,” Mickelborough told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix. “We were trading wins and losses with them all year.” Sarah Singer led the Wolverines with 27. Lara Schmidt paced Balfour with 27. Knoll forward Jennifer Rogne said the Wolverines didn’t fear the Redmen. “We’ve played them so many times that we didn’t look at them like unbeatable provincial champs. They’re a good team but we knew we could beat them. … This is an absolute dream. I’ve wanted this so bad for so many years and to finally get it in Grade 12 is so perfect. We never stopped until we got here.” Knoll appeared in control with a minute to play and a six-point lead. But a couple of turnovers led to Balfour hoops and suddenly Knoll was shooting free throws to save the game. The Wolverines kept going one-of-two from the line and when Balfour star Jana Schweitzer had a four-foot jumper with two seconds left to potentially tie the game 70-70, overtime was probable. “I was so hoping it wouldn’t go in and I was blocking out so hard,” said Rogne. That short shot rimmed out and Knoll grabbed the rebound. Schweitzer immediately committed her fifth foul to stop the clock and, after making her way to the bench, went to Balfour coach Wendy Bileski and said, “I’m so sorry.” Bileski said “that’s who we wanted shooting that shot. I couldn’t have asked for anything different.” One free throw and a missed Balfour heave later and the Wolverines escaped. “This is so exciting but it’s so stressful as a coach,” said Mickleborough, who won provincial titles in 1992 and ’93 while playing at Sheldon Williams. “I had a good feeling all day. I really felt it was our turn because we had been swapping wins. It was mine, yours, mine, yours and it was ours this time.” Knoll led 37-31 at half before Balfour stormed back to take a 38-37 lead, thanks to Lara Schmidt, who had 27 points, and Schweitzer. Mickleborough said that served as a wake-up call for her team. “Our defence picked it up after that and pulled us through, gave us a boost,” she said. Sarah Singer, who led Knoll with 27 points, Leah Anderson and Rogne used that boost to spark the team on offence and provide most of Knoll’s second-half scoring. The clock had initially expired after Schweitzer’s missed shot but the officials ordered two seconds put back on. “I was biting my tongue, hoping nothing could happen,” said Rogne. When the clock hit zeros for the second time, “it was party time,” she said with a grin. Balfour coach Wendy Bileski noted that “obviously, you’re disappointed to lose your last game, and it’s a big game to lose. But you still have to look at the bright spots. You have to give Winston Knoll a lot of credit.”
