In the quarterfinals, the 4th-seeded Saskatoon Evan Hardy Souls defeated the 5th-seeded Weyburn Eagles 65-49. The Souls had difficulty early guarding 6-1 Eagles post Emily Mitchell, as she scored eight quick points. But pressure by guards Lauren Evans and Jane Rowland helped Hardy build a 14-8 lead six minutes in. The lead continued to grow as Hardy’s press kept yielding dividends. Evans continued her scoring, and the Souls had a comfortable 29-9 lead with 6:31 left in the half. Then the wheels started to wobble. Weyburn found an answer for Hardy’s pressure and led by Mitchell and Jennifer Beach, reduced the lead to 29-22. A jumper by Rowland with 22 seconds left was Hardy’s only points in the last 6.5 minutes. The Souls led 31-22 at the break. Hardy’s press again became effective in the second half. The Souls were also more aggressive on the offensive glass, led by Danielle White. She converted numerous rebounds and finished with 12 points in the half. Hardy built on that momentum and the lead jumped to 18 points with eight minutes to go. The Souls were never threatened. “We lost focus when they went on that run,” said White, who scored 17. “We just came out in the second half, wanted to play hard, and show that we are better than the four seed that we got.” Nicole Poier added 16 points the Souls, Lauren Evans 12, Jane Rowland 12 and Sarah Dewarle 8. Jennifer Beach and Emily Mitchell each scored 16 to pace the Eagles. Amanda Steer added 6, Jessi Wilson 5, Shay Obst 4 and Jennifer Bresciani 2.

Our team played hard, which is all we can ask.”

In the other semi, the 2nd-seeded Bishop James Mahoney Saints edged the 3rd-seeded Regina Thom Trojans 74-70. The teams traded the lead early. Although Chelsea Grimson picked her third foul with seven minutes remaining in the half, the Saints still led 42-38 at the break. Jessica Kaczowka added 21, Margot Jestadt 14, Kim Crawford 4, Deanna Tessier 4, Kelsey Karst 4, Carrie Zimmer 2, Nadia Luciuk 2 and Amie Loeden 1, while Marie Demay was scoreless. Jestadt told the Regina Leader-Post that “we’re a mature team and we’ve learned how to stay focused. Most of us have been playing together since elementary school. We knew we were going to be a good team but we didn’t realize we’d be this good until later in the year. We’re the only undefeated team in the city and being undefeated as our goal.” LeBoldu led 36-28 at the half as they rode the interior play of Kadzowka and the perimeter play of Werapitiya to the easy win. “Our team totally bonded,” Werapitiya said. Chelsea Grimson led Mahoney (coached by Lloyd Howey and Maureen Howey) with 14. Pam Seipp added 11, Julie Abernethy 8, Meagen Atkinson 8, Dionne Bihari 7, Mackenzie Grant 6 and Candice Bihari 2.
