Ardens co-coach Lori Grainger told the Regina Leader-post that “this underdog thing … The Ardens have never been underdogs. It’s fun. If I’d known this, I would have lost years ago. It’s so nice to take the pressure off.” Grainger called her team “the hillbillies from down south” and noted that “we knew if we were going to win any games here, it would be our first one. We tried to hammer it into the kids heads that all the pressure was on Walter Murray. It was their court, their fans and they’re the Saskatoon city champs. We’re not expected to show up on time. If we get our uniforms right, they think we’re doing well.” Thomas said “we weren’t even expected to be in Hoopla. We work well together as a team.” Dawn Pierce paced the Marauders (coached by Donna Veale) with 17. Susan Hawley added 8, Amber New 7, Stephanie Mushka 6, Jennifer Day 5, Shelley Wilson 3 and Meera Patel 3, while Erin Dewhurst was scoreless. Mushka said “we had our lead, then we all relaxed and played the worst game ever. When we tried to get back up, we couldn’t. They outhustled us.”

In the other quarterfinal, the Saskatoon Aden Bowman Bears edged the Weyburn Eagles 68-64 as Kelly Summerfeld scored 21, Amy Ford 18, Paula Thompson 17, Leah Ector 7, Karen Dehm 2, Andrea Webster 2 and Christine Kleppe 1. Stacy Yeik paced the Eagles with 25. Emily Mitchell added 9, Amy Frederickson 8, Pat Georgacacos 8, Sarah Dufour 8 and Amy Becker 6, while Adine Oxelgren, Shay Obst and Marissa Abao were scoreless.

In the semis, the Regina Thom Trojans spanked the Swift Current Ardens 77-61 as Corrin Wersta scored 35, Bree Burgess 17, Dawn Birley 12, Dori Gutfriend 4, Trishia Belay 2, Evelyn Nkeyasen 2, Susan Daley 2, Coralee Savage 2 and Christa Howie 1. Birley told the Regina Leader-Post that “they challenged us.” The Trojans led 55-51 at the half. Holly Thomas paced the Ardens with 15. Sara Johnson added 12, Amy Thomas 10, Jaime Sthamann 10, Andrea Martens 6, Alysa Regier 4, Miranda Moen 2 and Jen Fehr 2. Nkeyasen told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix that “our team is physically fit. The stuff we do wrong is all mental things.” Burgess said “the first half no one was really on. Then we started realizing that, even though they’re packing in, we still to drive and penetrate and dish and stuff. When we started doing that, we got a lot more inside and outside shots and they started going in.” Ardens coach Dave Redekopp said “they stuck with them as long as they possibly could.”

In the other semi, the Regina Sheldon-Williams Spartans edged the Saskatoon Aden Bowman Bears 61-57 as Becky Poley scored 29, Joni Mickleborough 10, Maija McCauley 7, Shannon Johnstone 7, Heather Dedman 6 and Lindsay Stuart 2. Spartans coach Dave Taylor told the Regina Leader-post that “it’s another game I knew we’d win. It was just how ugly could we make it. We don’t have that killer instint. We can’t put teams away. I tell the team we’re the most talented team in the province but we’re enot the hardest working team.” The Spartans led 38-22 at the half but the Bears went on a late 10-0 run to take a 56-55 lead. Paula Thompson paced the Bears with 21. Amy Ford added 18, Kelly Sommerfeld 11, Leah Ector 2, Andra Webster 2, Kristi May 2 and Karen Dehm 1. Bears coach Layra Farmer was at a loss to explain Regina’s superiotity. “The strength is there in Regina, whatever is goin on. Ihear the church league is good. Or the water actually is good. I’m not sure.”

In the bronze medal match, the Saskatoon Aden Bowman Bears dispatched the Swift Current Ardens 75-61 as Kelly Sommerfeld scored 22, Paula Thompson 18, Amy Ford 12, Leah Ector 10, Andra Webster 9, Kristi May 2 and Christine Kleppe 2. Andrea Martens paced the Ardens with 22. Holly Thomas added 11, Sara Johnson 8, Jaime Sthamann 8, Alysa Regier 6, Amy Thomas 5 and Gina Sellinger 1.

In the final, the Regina Sheldon-Williams Spartans torched the Regina Thom Trojans 70-49 as Becky Poley scored 23, Heather Dedman 14, Shannon Johnstone 11, Maija McCauley 9, Joni Micklebrough 8, Lindsay Stuart 3 and Bevin Bradley 2. Poley told the Regina Leader-Oost that “last year, we finished third, so I never got a chance to be a provincial champion. This feels pretty good. Actually, it feels great. … We were pretty confidence but we knew the game could go either way. We knew that if we played the way we can, we would be okay.” Corrin Wersta paced the Trojans with 17. Bree Burgess added 12, Dawn Birley 10, Christa Howie 3, Valerie Lozinski 3, Dori Gutfriend 2 and Evelyn Nkeyasen 2. Wersta said “they were more mentally in the game than we were. They did a good job. … Our team has the talent to go all the way. We just didn’t show it. … Our team wanted this very badly. It’s not something we’re not going to forget for a while.” Spartans coach Larry Longmore told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix that “the girls came out tonight and we just played a complete game. If you get ahead on a team that’s comparable to you, it’s just a matter of holding that lead. … (Thom) had a run where they got to within 4 or 5 points and it just a matter of us stepping up our game and going back at them.”
