In the South playoffs: …………………………………………………… In the opening round, the Regina Luther Lions whipped the Estevan Elecs 74-41 as Lisa Moellman scored 20 and Jillian Brandt 16. …………………………………………………… In the first qualifier, the Swift Current Ardens clipped the Regina Luther Pandas 64-55 in overtime. Lisa Moellman paced the Pandas with 23. Jillian Brandt added 14 and Monica Paulls 14. …………………………………………………… In the second qualifier, the Regina Luther Pandas edged the Regina Usher Unicorns 50-47 as Lisa Moellman scored 21. The Unicorns (coached by Paula Miller) included natalie Saccaro, Pam Shing, Shauna Melvin.
In the provincial semis, the Regina Luther Pandas clipped the Prince Albert Carlton Crusaders 52-43 as Jillian Brandt scored 17 and Ann Dunlop 10. Andrea Maier paced the Crusaders with 12. Pandas co-coach Angela Tillier told the Regina Leader-Post that “it wasn’t pretty but we’ll take it.” The Pandas held the Crusaders scoreless for the first six minutes but Carlton drew within 24-20 at the half. Tillie said “our defensive performance was much better but our offensive performance is still not what it should be. We had a lot of turnovers.” Crusaders coach Jacquie Smith-Thorsteinson said “playing for bronze is like kissing your sister.”
In the other semi, the Swift Current Ardens clocked the North Battleford Comprehensive Vikings 75-38 as Sandra Marchie scored 22 and Shelly Knakoske 14. Jana Friedenstab paced the Vikings with 20.
In the bronze medal match, the Prince Albert Carlton Crusaders edged the North Battleford Comprehensive Vikings 63-58 as Andrea Maier scored 21 and Tara Neess 9. Jana Friedenstab paced the Vikings with 29. Carmen Kjargaard added 9.
In the final, the Swift Current Ardens torched the Regina Luther Pandas 65-11 as Sandra Murchie scored 16 and Kristi Reimer 16. Monica Pauls paced the Pandas with 11. Murchie told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix that “we never get tired of winning. It’s the greatest thing.” Pandas co-coach Angela Tillier said “we’re not disappointed at all. To be the only Regina team to make it to the finals is some thing.” Pandas co-coach Annette Lister added that “no one really wanted to take the shot and the initiative. The leadership, the willingness to go to the hoop, was missing. That comes with experience.” The Ardens led 31-19 at the half and broke it open with a 19-2 run midway through the second half.
