Golden Suns coach Ron Rohac told the Regina Leader-Post that “we finally learned how to penetrate their zone. Once we started, it was all over. We start two grade 10s – Nicole Beaudry and Eileen Benesh – and early in the game, this kind of competition was really making them nervous. Plus, there’s the fact that not many teams can afford to stay in a zone with us. … I was really pleased with the way we played defence. We let them get close at the end of the first half by going into a zone and they shot the hell out of us.” Marauders coach Tom Kuntz said “I’m not ashamed of the way we played. Their shots went in while ours rolled around the rim and bounced out. I don’t what it is about LeBoldus. The girls really get up to play them. LeBoldus is an outside-shooting team and we didn’t give any away. Our shots just didn’t go in. But we played our hearts out and gave them a good run.” Janice Hanofski paced the Marauders with 19. Tracey Richter added 14 and Irene Dolinski 2. The Marauders (coached by Tom Kuntz, assistant Oksana Gawdyda) also included Lori Obrigentsch, Donna Rybchuk, Chris Kuzma. …………………………………………………… The Archbishop M.C. Eileen Benesh led the Golden Suns with 13. Anna Rizak added 10. The Golden Suns (coach by Ron Rohac) also included Nicole Beaudry, Heather Babchuk, Maryann Zakreski, Lois O’Grady. …………………………………………………… In the other semi, the Archbishop M.C. O’Neill Titans clipped the Marian Saints 60-52 as Bonnie Giles scored 22 and Lori Lueck 12. Titans coach Sandy Harazny told the Regina Leader-Post “we pride ourselves with our defence. Prior to this game, we talked defence. Mind you, we always talk defence. The Titans led 34-28 at the half but the Saints rallied to within 50-48 with eight minutes to play. Harazny said “I just told the girls to play our game, instead of letting them play their game. It settled the girls down. We were starting to run around and give the ball away. Calling the timeout when I did (following a 10-2 Saints run) also took some of the momentum away from them.” Saints coach John MacDonald said “no doubt that timeout took some of the momentum away from us. But the girls weren’t shooting as well tonight as they have in the past. We weren’t getting inside on them and controlling the boards. We talked about those two areas before the game. I thought gave it their best though.” Titan Donna Michaluk said “we were going with the press (hence the foul trouble). I just told myself I wasn’t going to get any more. They’ve got a good team and you really had to watch their cutters.” Mary Lou Tourigny led the Saints with 18. Marilyn Wappel added 14. The Saints (coached by John MacDonald) also included Tina Dawa, Laurie Brenhoen, Anna Marie Behm, Terry Malloy. …………………………………………………… In the final, the Sheldon Williams Spartans edged the Archbishop M.C. O’Neill Titans 57-53 as Debbie Weedmark scored 24. Bonnie Giles paced the Titans with 16. Daphne Zimmer added 10. There were 12 lead changes in the second half. Denise Barry gave the Spartans a 55-53 lead with less than a minute to play by nailing a 20-foot jumper. Karen Proud and Michele Schappert added free throws to ice the win. Schappert told the Regina Leader-Post that “there was no way that we wanted this game to be our last.” Weedmark said “we might have been a little uptight in the beginning but we knew that we could beat them. They’re a good team so we knew we had to play our best.” The Titans led 31-29 at the half. Titans coach Sandy Harazny said “I don’t think there was a turning point. What hurt us though was not capitalizing when we had the chances. At the half, we talked about maintaining our composure and doing all the little things right. At the end of the game, we started letting them take that second and third shot. I’m disappointed we lost but I’m proud of those kids. They gave it their best shot.” Bonnie Giles led the Titans with 16. Daphne Zimmer added 10. The Titans (coached by Sandy Harazny) also included Tracey Glab, Donna Michaluk, Lori Lueck, Taryn Bell, Karen Dermody.

In the South region final, the Regina Sheldon-Williams Spartans clipped the Swift Current Ardens 55-46 as Debbie Weedmark scored 27 and Denise Barry 15. Les Treen led the Ardens with 20. Shari Wilson added 16. Spartans coach Wilma Dowling told the Regina Leader-Post that “we won because we stayed calm. The girls played our type of game and didn’t throw the ball away. A month ago, I don’t know if they’d done that. Now, we’re playing control basketball.”

In the provincial semis, the Regina Sheldon-Williams Spartans defeated Prince Albert Carlton Crusaders 76-43. The Spartans opened with a 10-0 run. The Crusaders rallied to within 14-10 but then Debbie Weedmark, Denise Barry and Sandra Templeton took control of the boards, while Michelle Schappert kept forcing turnovers. Debbie Weedmark led the Spartans with 16. Denise Barry added 15, Karen Proud 12, Margot Petrovic 12 and Sandra Templeton 8. Morelle McKay led the Crusaders with 12. Suzanne Krayetski added 11. Sandra Templeton told the Regina Leader-Post that “we’re emotional and that helps us win. Our warm up really gets us going and we just try to keep that going during the game.” Coach Wilma Dowling said “we tended to throw the ball away and play a disorganized type of game.” Crusaders coach Barb Berge said “no doubt we were intimidated. We haven’t had a lot of 4A competition this year and that hurt us. They’re an extremely aggressive team and that hurt us. They’d slow our offence and that would put our shooting off. … I thought my girls could have played a little better than they did. We’ve had better nights offensively.”

In the other semi, the Saskatoon Walter Murray Marauders defeated the Weyburn Composite Eagles 67-53 as Sandra Peterson scored 23, Wendy Hurd 12, Jamie Burgess 8 and Dawne Lindholme 6. The game was postponed by a day because of a blizzard.

In the bronze medal match, the Weyburn Composite Eagles edged the Prince Albert Carlton Crusaders 52-48.

In the final, the Regina Sheldon-Williams Spartans defeated the Saskatoon Walter Murray Marauders 72-54 after taking control in the second quarter and sprinting to a 44-30 lead at the break. The Marauders pulled no closer than 44-40 early in the second half. Denise Barry led Sheldon-Williams with 30. Debbie Weedmark added 17 and Margot Petrvic 12. Sandra Peterson led Walter Murray with 17. Dawne Lindholme added 8, Janet McCallum 6 and Wendy Hurd 6. “They’ve been playing together since grade 10. And in their postseason games, they’ve developed that poise,” Sheldon-Williams coach Wilma Downing told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix. Dowling told the Regina Leader-Post that “these girls just had so much desire. They wanted this title so bad they could taste it. We’ve been talking, thinking and practicing this moment for months. You bet it’s worth it.” Denise Berry said “we have a tendency to come out a little stale early in the halves. That’s what happened to us in the second half. When we get running around and making bad passes, it costs us. It’s all a matter of concentration. When you stop thinking about what you’re going to do, like we did for a while, it’s going to cost you.” Marauders coach Dorothy Lukken said “I really think the two games in one day hurt us. Playing two games in tournaments is a lot different. In this type of competition, it’s so emotionally draining. The girls gave it their best and that’s all I could have hoped for. … They hurt us a lot from all areas of the floor. What also made matters worse was that their zone was so tough. We just couldn’t penetrate and that stopped us from feeding our inside people.”
