Trojans coach Henry Saucier told the Regina Leader-Post “we went to the press for the final few minutes and scoring those six points will really help our confidence … The season has been a very good one, though. I’m not disappointed. My girls have all played very well for me. They were ready tonight, I thought, but ….” Tartans coach Kelly Lovering said “we were working on pride tonight. We let ourselves slide a bit and it cost us an undefeated season when we lost to Calgary in the final of the Campbell Invitational Tournament. That was really a blessing in disguise, I think, because we’ve been ready to play ever since. … Henri’s got lots left. You can bet on that. You know they’ll be back. They know that if they’re going to beat Campbell, they’ll probably be able to do it only once, so why do it at the city championship? Why not wait til provincials?” Lorraine MacCormack led the Trojans with 12. Martina Cain added 12, Adua Assinger 9 and Karin Winkler 6.

The Trojans also included Jan Surbey, Glenda Schmidt. Trojans coach Sheila Chad said “they stoned us in the first half with their fastbreak. … We didn’t get the ball to Patti Rowley enough. She’s our whole offence and controls the play when she’s out there.” …………………………………………………… In the other quarterfinal, the 4th-seeded Aden Bowman Bears bombed the 5th-seeded Walter Murray Marauders 87-41 after leading 32-11 at the half. Souls coach Pat Wegner told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix that “it’s been a psychological battle all year. If the kids want to win bad enough, they go out and give their best. Tonight, they just wanted it.” Mount Royal led 19-16 at the half. Pat Harasymchuk paced the Mustangs with 16. Linda Recknell added 10, Debbie Fisher 8, Beth Doerksen 2 and Nancy Kohut 2. Mustangs coach Pat Eger said “they played more of their bench in the first half and it showed up in the second half. We tired out and they got some fastbreaks that I don’t think they normally would have.”

In the provincial semis, the Regina Campbell Tartans pounded the Saskatoon Mount Royal Mustangs 110-69 as Sharon Douglas scored 50. Mount Royal coach Pat Eger told the Regina Leader-Post that “she is something else. We checked our charts at half-time and she’d missed only one shot from the floor and two from the line. We tried to stop her by putting two people on her and playing the box but it didn’t work. And it’s not only Douglas. They have a lot of good players and they all feed her very well.” Debbie Perry added 14 for the Tartans. Barb Forsyth scored 11 and Ingrid Bintner 10. Tartans coach Kelly Lovering said “the girls weren’t completely satisfied with our offence or defence. I think either was especially smooth but I think that was because of all the substituting I did.” Nancy Kohut scored 23 for Mount Royal. Pat Harsymchuk added 14 and Debbie Fisher 13.

In the other semi, the Regina Thom Trojans defeated the Saskatoon Evan Hardy Souls 71-70 as Deb Boris hit two of three from the line on the final play of the game. Evan Hardy led 12-4 early and appeared in control but Trojan coach Henry Saucier switched to a press and rattled the Souls. Thom led 40-28 at the half. But Evan Hardy whittled away slowly and took a 67-64 lead with five minutes to play. Thom rallied to tie it at 67 and led 69-68 with 30 seconds to go. With four seconds to play, Lori Smith put Evan Hardy ahead 70-69. Thom came back down the court and Boris was fouled at the buzzer, setting the stage for the winning free throws. Boris led Thom with 20 points. Kerin Winkler added 19, Martina Cain 14 and Lorraine McCormack 10. Leslie Burton paced Evan Hardy with 27. Nancy Laxdel added 14. Souls coach Pat Wegner told the Regina Leader-Post that “there’s no way that two free throws can take anything away from them. That was what I said to my kids after the game. They played a super second half. Thoms should be commended too. They came back from a deficit. They pressed three players in the front court and we couldn’t handle that. They have some super outside shooters and you just can’t defend a team that players as well on the inside as they do on the outside.”

In the bronze medal match, the Saskatoon Mount Royal Mustangs edged the Saskatoon Evan Hardy Souls 43-40 after leading 27-16 at the half. Mustangs coach Pat Eger told the Regina Leader-Post that “when we played Evan Hardy in the Saskatoon city final, they but us badly on the boards. Tonight, I thought we outrebounded them and I think it won the game for us. We worked very hard. We wanted this one.” The Souls (coached by Pat Wegner) included Sandy Menely, Leslie Burton, Nancy Wilkinson, Nancy Laxdal, Lori Smith, Leslie Burton, Cyndy Rodych, Patti Rodych, Dawn Cory.

In the final, the Regina Campbell Tartans pounded the Regina Thom Trojans 86-41 as center Sharon Douglas scored 35. Campbell led 26-13 in the first half and 46-21 at the break. Shelly Johnson added 19 for Campbell, Debbie Perry 10 and Ingrid Bintner 10. Kerin Winkler led Thom with 17. Lorraine McCormack and Martina Cain each added 7, Debbie Boris 5 and Adua Assinger 5. Tartans coach Kelly Lovering told the Regina Leader-Post that “it was nothing more than they deserved. They’re a great bunch of kids and they worked hard for me right from day one.” Campbell opened with a press the dominated the defensive boards, quickly taking command. Lovering said “defence is our psych-up. If we’re turning the ball over on defence, tweedle dum and tweedle dee (Bintner and Johnson) are on the run and their guard is in the revolving door.” Trojans coach Henri Saucier said “Kelly finished his rush tonight. We’ve also started ours. My girls are ready for next year. Our goal will be an undefeated season. It’s been a great year. They’ve done everything I’ve asked of them and tonight, they did justice to themselves. We lost to a great team and if we can be as good as they were, next year, we’ll be a happy team.” Sharon Douglas said “this is one of the best of them by far. I’ve been waiting for this for 4 years.”
