In the provincial final, the Regina Thom Trojans nipped the Saskatoon Nutana Collegiate Blues 44-43 as Bev Todd scored 11 and Donna Graham 10. Thom led 36-29 with eight minutes to play. But Nutana rallied to within two with a minute to go. Leah Skolrood hit one of two free throws to chop the margin to one with 19 seconds to play. Nutana had led 25-22 at the half. Todd and center Myra Kellendonk fouled out for Thom, while Skolrood and Brenda Brown fouled out for Nutana. Some 27 fouls were called against Thom and 23 against Nutana. Donna Hunter led Nutana with 17. Brown added 11 and Patty Pinder and Pat Nicholson each scored 10. The Trojans hit 9-28 from the line, while the Blues were 11-22. Trojans coach Zoya Shmyr told the Regina Leader-Post that Donna Graham “did a fine job for us, especially in the last minute of play. Graham helped us stall when we needed it most. … Todd’s ability to penetrate their press aided our offensive. We didn’t shoot well but that could be attributed to our unfamiliarity with their baskets and court. Their hoops had more spring than the ones we’re accustomed to, which made it difficult to judge rebounds accurately.”
