Our guys came with the mindset that we’re going to dictate right from minute one. We got more aggressive with our trap. We’ve been biding our time, we’ve been waiting, but now when the ball gets over mid-court, we’re going for it.” Central out-scored the Griffins 34-4 in the second quarter and led 62-17 at half time. …………………………………………………… The 7th-seeded Saskatoon Marion Graham Falcons clocked the 10th-seeded Regina Miller Marauders 81-58 after leading 50-21 at the half. The Spartans also included Jan Perello.

In the quarterfinals, the top-seeded Prince Albert St. Mary Marauders dusted the 9th-seeded Moose Jaw Peacock Toilers 92-69 after leading 50-38 at the half on a trey by Patience Ishimwe at the buzzer. The Marauders held the Toilers scoreless for the first five minutes of the second half. Patience Ishimwe paced the Marauders with 24. Cody Sjogren added 16 and Aaron Halyk 12. The 2nd-seeded Moose Jaw Central Cyclones dumped the 7th-seeded Saskatoon Marion Graham Falcons 96-71. The Falcons led 26-23 after one quarter. The Cyclones led 49-40 at the half. “Marion Graham is a great team,” said Central coach Leigh Pethick. “We were lucky to be in the game after that first quarter I thought. We could have folded, but we didn’t. We came back and won the second quarter and kept it rolling from there. Our guys settled down and worked together. We had to match their intensity, but we did. It was a good test.” The Cyclones led 70-64 early in the fourth quarter when the Falcons missed two attempts from beyond the arc that would have cut the lead to three. Instead Cyclones post Myles McDougall scored and was fouled to put the Cyclones up by eight. He missed the free throw, but Dax Whitehead grabbed the rebound fed Jon Phillips for another basket. The next time down the floor McDougall blocked a shot and scored at the other end. In a matter of seconds, the Cyclones lead ballooned to a dozen and that kick-started a 15-0 run that iced the game. “Our game plan on their two shooters was to hassle them and I think that paid dividends in the third and fourth quarter,” said Pethick. “They had to be tired. Any time you have to run all game long and are bumping into guys, it’s going to affect your shooting.” Dax Whitehead paced the Cyclones with 25. Myles McDougall added 16, Zach Scutte 16 and Bretton Konihowski 11. Addison Dewar led the Falcons with 22. Tim Campbell added 11. The Falcons also included Dean Visvanathan, Leo Agpoon, Mitch Klassen, Russell Maningo, Everett Lang, Russell Lefley, Joshua Cline, Wynston Ramsay, Parker Wall, Cole Reid and Zachary Steinauer.

O’Neill Titans clubbed the 6th-seeded Warman Wolverines 68-46. “The boys are ecstatic,” said Titans coach Adam Huffman. “This group has really come together in the past few weeks … they have become a family and have started to play for one another. It’s kind of scary how much they have improved and how they have come together like this.” Rance Ratt paced the Titans with 21. Opong Bramble added 20. Logan Misskey led the Wolverines with 19. The Wolverines (coached by Matt Misskey) included Kyle Clarke, Brandon Duval, Karlin Dyck, Dustin Gasmo, Adam Leik, Cody Parsons, Nyle Segovia, and Braden Wiens.

In the semis, the top-seeded Prince Albert St. Mary Marauders clocked the 4th-seeded Yorkton Regional Raiders 74-53. Brian Tolentino paced the Marauders with 22. Daniel Mandzik led the Raiders with 16. The Marauders opened with a 13-0 run and romped. Their full-court press completely handcuffed the Raiders. “We were tight and nervous and it showed in some of the plays that didn’t go our way in the semifinal,” said Raiders coach Jason Payne. “Going down 13-0 to start the game was a huge blow for us as we went into halftime just down 15 so if we could have erased that start, we pretty much played with them for the rest of the first half after that point.”

In the other semi, the 2nd-seeded Moose Jaw Central Cyclones stomped the 3rd-seeded Regina Archbishop M.C. O’Neill Titans 74-49 after leading 39-27 at the half. “The guys played great. They were really ready for O’Neill’s big guys and did a good job all around,” said Central coach Leigh Pethick. “I was very happy with how we played.” The Cyclones led by nine after a quarter and pushed their lead to a dozen at the half. They outscored the Titans 16-6 in the third to extend their lead to 22 and romped. “Our goal was to limit the amount of touches their big guys had. We wanted to pressure the ball and wear their point guards down a little bit throughout the game. That paid off,” Pethick said. “They had a couple of shooters that we did a good job of closing down and rebounding. Our guys executed well. Dax Whitehead and Myles McDougall did a great job on their big post.” Myles McDougall paced the Cyclones with 15. Jonathan Phillips added 14. Yol Piok led the Titans with 15. Hakim Ocaya added 12.

In the bronze medal match, the 4th-seeded Yorkton Regional Raiders edged the 3rd-seeded Regina Archbishop M.C. O’Neill Titans 62-59. “I spoke to the players and Grade Twelve’s going into the bronze medal game and asked them how they wanted to play their last game with a Raider jersey on and I felt that kind of spoke to them heading into a game where both teams could have easily just mailed it in and went home after a tough loss the day before,” said Raiders coach Jason Payne. The Titans took a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter but Darien Kequahtoway, who scored 21, rallied the Raiders with three-point bombs and then David Kauenhofen drained a trey to win it. “It is hard to play in a bronze medal game after wanting so badly to win a provincial title but I can say we are all proud of what we accomplished this year and I will miss each player who graduated on this team” said Payne. Daniel Mandziuk added 18 for the Raiders. Opang Bramble led the Titans with 18. The Titans (coached by Jeff Lukomski, assisted by Adam Huffman) also included Rance Ratt, Yol Piok, Brian Runns, Hakim Ocaya, Derek Eckert, and Kasim Ocaya.

In the final, the top-seeded Prince Albert St. Mary Marauders defeated the 2nd-seeded Moose Jaw Central Cyclones 73-68 after leading 17-8 after one quarter and 38-20 at the half. It marked the first provincial title for the Marauders after finishing runner-up five times. “It’s nice to finally get a gold medal said Marauders coach Dale Regel, adding that his team retaining its focus and “believed in themselves. We were able to maintain our composure and not get upset. If we played through the low points, the game would come back our way.” The Cyclones lost their second consecutive final. “The team was, of course, upset, they were disappointed that they couldn’t finish off the comeback,” said head coach Leigh Pethick. “I was pretty happy with how we finished the game in the second half and, overall, the guys played hard and that’s all you can ask for. We had a very slow start and couldn’t buy a basket in the first half. We were down 21 at the start of the fourth quarter and made an amazing comeback, got to within five points with a minute to play, but couldn’t finish it off.” The Cyclones went on a 28-12 run in the fourth quarter. “We just fell a few points short in the end. It’s still a great group of guys and I’m happy to have coached them this year.” Brian Tolentino paced the Marauders with 21. Aaron Halyk added 17 boards. Myles McDougall led the Cyclones with 26.
