In the opening round: …………………………………………………… The top-seeded Moose Jaw Central Cyclones clocked the 16th-seeded Estevan Elecs 94-41 after leading 46-24 at the half. Jon Phillips paced the Cyclones with 12. Devon Parker added 11 and Charlie MacDonald and Bryce Marcotte both scored 10 points. John Elder led the Elecs with 19. “We played great,” said Central coach Leigh Pethick. “We stumbled a little bit, but we came back hard in the second half. The guys bought into the fact that we weren’t playing our best. They knew what they were doing wrong. They took it upon themselves and it was nice to see the effort and intensity.” Estevan assistant Rob Gallaway said “we knew that our first game against Moose Jaw was going to be tough. We held them close (in the first half) because of Elder. He played very well and kept us in the game. It was a fast-paced game and they were pretty good. Going into the second half, some of our guys started getting frustrated and it started to go downhill. The main thing about the first game is they were a very good team, one of the best I’ve coached against all year.” The Elecs also included Calder Clark and Nolan Tide. …………………………………………………… The 8th-seeded Regina Archbishop M.C. O’Neill Titans thrashed the 9th-seeded Prince Albert Carlton Crusaders 75-53 after leading 30-24 at the half. Robin Cleto paced the Titans with 24. The Titans also included Matthew Yee, Kasim Ocaya and Dallas Paproski. Deveraux Gatin led the Crusaders with 13. The Crusaders also included Kenneth Cotterill. …………………………………………………… The Yorkton Regional Raiders dumped the Weyburn Eagles 72-56. …………………………………………………… The Regina Miller Marauders whipped the Warman Wolverines 77-56 after leading by six at the half. …………………………………………………… The Prince Albert St. Mary Marauders dusted the Saskatoon Bedford Road Redmen 84-47. …………………………………………………… The Meadow Lake Carpenter Spartans edged the Melfort Comets 66-62. “We got off to a slow start as we had trouble making shots and found ourselves down 7-0 early on,” said Melfort coach Linsey Thornton. “The boys battled back and were able to get on the board by attacking the basket and making some free throws. After the first quarter we were down by six. In the second quarter we started to make some more shots and the game was tied 35-35 at the half.” The third quarter was back and forth with several lead changes. After the third period, Melfort trailed by one point. “The fourth quarter was very similar to the third but Meadow Lake took a six-point lead with about four minutes left and we just couldn’t get it back. When we got a stop, we could not connect offensively. In the last five minutes of the game, we did not make enough shots to win,” Thornton stated. “Overall, I was extremely proud of the boy’s effort. They battled for 40 minutes and never got down even when we had a slow start. It was probably the most complete game I have ever seen this group play and, in the end, we just didn’t make enough shots, which was generally our strength. We only converted 31 per cent of our shots from inside the three-point line and at this time of year that makes it extremely tough to win.” …………………………………………………… The North Battleford Vikings stomped the Nipawin L.P. Miller Bears 74-43 after leading 24-10, 41-19, 56-36 at the quarters. Kyle Sabraw and Cody Buziak each scored 20 to pace the Vikings. Blair Duke led the Bears with 15. …………………………………………………… The Yorkton Sacred Heart Saints dusted the Swift Current Colts 74-62 after leading 21-16, 33-27 and 53-37 at the quarters. P. Liebrecht led the Saints with 29. K Wegren paced the Colts with 21.

In the quarterfinals, the Moose Jaw Central Cyclones spun the Regina Archbishop M.C. O’Neill Titans 92-62 after leading 46-22 at the half. Myles McDougall paced the Cyclones with 20. Bryce Marcotte added 16. Derek Eckert led the Titans with 14.

The Yorkton Regional Raiders stomped the Regina Miller Marauders 70-44. The Marauders were led by Paul Vogelsang.

The Meadow Lake Carpenter Spartans clipped the Prince Albert St. Mary Marauders 68-63. The Spartans broke to a 10-2 lead and led 21-15 after one quarter and 40-33 at the half. St. Mary led 60-59 by Kyle Thompson drilled a trey to turn the momentum down the stretch. The Marauders included Evan Halyk, Aaron Halyk, George Leberio, Kole Pazuik, Nigel Weir, Riley Houle, Mathew Friesen, Joel Parchomchuk, Lucas Wells, Kienan Holash, Travis Sjogren, Cody Sjogren, Patience Ishimwe and Brian Tolentino.

In the last quarterfinal, the North Battleford Vikings dumped the Yorkton Sacred Heart Saints 76-65. Yorkton took the early lead but the Vikings ripped off a 14-0 run to take a 41-30 lead at the half. Cody Buziak led the Vikings with 23. P. Liebrecht paced the Saints with 26.

In the semis, the Moose Jaw Central Cyclones bounced the Yorkton Regional Raiders 76-61. “The guys played great,” said Cyclones coach Leigh Pethick. “They played our typical aggressive defence and we applied a lot of pressure and rebounded the ball hard.” Both teams came out with some nervous moments to start, but the Cyclones offence found its game early and the Cyclones strong defensive intensity paid off. “In the first half we were a little tentative,” said Pethick. “They put pressure on us with their half-court trap and we weren’t our normal aggressive selves. In the second half we were more aggressive — if a lane opened, we were driving to the basket. We’re much better when we play aggressively.” Raiders co-coach Jason Payne said. “We didn’t shoot the ball very well.”

In the other semi, the North Battleford Comprehensive Vikings clipped the Meadow Lake Carpenter Spartans 63-42.

In the bronze medal match, the Yorkton Regional Raiders dumped the Meadow Lake Carpenter Spartans 63-42 as Ben Redl scored 21. Ronnie Goretski led the Spartans with 21. Spartans coach Kendra Syrota said “it was a good experience for the boys and especially for those coming back. Now they know a little taste of Hoopla and what provincials is all about. The boys played well and fourth in the province is not too bad. We couldn’t put the ball in the hoop at the right time, unfortunately. The boys played really tough in that game because they played really good defence.” Coach Jason Payne said “I’m proud they were able to (compete). They gave it their best effort. It’s gratifying to win, end the season on a winning note. We realized our goal. We worked hard to get here (2012 Hoopla).”
In the final, the 3rd-seeded North Battleford Vikings stomped the top-seeded Moose Jaw Central Cyclones 86-52 as Kyle Sabraw scored 23. Jonathan Phillips and Bryce Marcotte each scored 12 to pace the Cyclones. “It couldn’t have gone any better for us,” said Vikings senior Robbie Gaetz. The Vikings took the lead early in the first quarter and never looked back. “It is a great feeling whenever you win a provincial championship,” said Vikings coach Jamie Sommerfeld. “We were expecting a good battle because Central gave it to us for most of the year, so we were prepared. I think we had a good game plan in place.” Cyclones coach Leigh Pethick said the team getting it going. “There is not much to say. We are pretty disappointed in how the game turned out and I’ll take all the heat on that and keep it off the guys. I guess I didn’t prepare them as well in regards to the intensity.” The Cyclones had some difficulty from tipoff, as they couldn’t get their shots to fall, even though they were outrebounding the Vikings early. Central found themselves down by 15 after the first quarter and 23 at the half time break. “When you have those top teams playing each other, it really depends on the day, who’s feeling it. The ball can be unfriendly to you at times and the rim can be unfriendly,” said Sommerfeld. “Fortunately for us today, in that first quarter, we couldn’t miss and we jumped out to a lead.”
