The Meadow Lake Carpenter Spartans nipped the Prince Albert St. Mary Marauders 53-51 after leading 29-21 at the half.

The North Battleford Vikings clocked the Weyburn Eagles 83-48 after leading 44-28 at the half.

In the last quarterfinal, the Regina Martin Monarchs dumped the Moose Jaw Central Cyclones 76-62 after leading 35-25 at the half.

In the semis, the Moose Jaw Peacock Toilers clubbed the Meadow Lake Carpenter Spartans 70-48 as Josh Hushi scored 21 and Brock Overs 20. Kale Lajeunesse paced the Spartans with 21. Dean Villeneuve added 9. The Spartans took an early lead but were held to three points in the second quarter as they fell behind 33-18. The Spartans came out on fire in the second half, but they quickly ran into foul trouble. “We did play a really good game against Moose Jaw Peacock,” said coach Tim Johnstone. “We were all really happy with the way we played that game, but eventually the ball just stopped going in for us.” The foul trouble wore on the team more and more as the game went on. “They’re a very deep team, they’ve got a lot of big guys, and they just wore us down,” Johnstone said. “When we get tired, we tend to get a little bit scrappy.”

In the other semi, the North Battleford Vikings stomped the Regina Martin Monarchs 73-49 as Dustin Grosjean scored 21 and Landon Albert 18. Nygel Shingoose paced the Monarchs with 16. Asher Hastings added 10. The defending champion Vikings were coached by rookie Jamie Sommerfeld, a former defensive lineman with the Saskatoon Hilltops, offensive lineman with the University of Saskatchewan Huskies and forward with the Huskies basketball squad. “You realize how much you’ve actually forgotten over the years,” Sommerfeld said of the transition from athlete to coach. “It’s a lot easier when you get a good group of kids to help you work through that. I like both (sports) but it makes for a really long season.” Sommerfeld took over as head coach from Bryan Cottini. The Vikings trailed Martin — which was seeded 11th heading into 4A playoffs — 31-29 at halftime before torching their opponents over the final 20 minutes. “Last year, a lot of these guys weren’t starters; they were on the bench,” Sommerfeld said. “For them to experience this on their own, knowing they’re the ones who got themselves there . . . they’re ecstatic. But they know they have a job to do.” Monarch guard Dillan Pollock played despite having torn the meniscus in his right knee three weeks earlier.

“This is the last year I’ll play with these guys,” Pollock told the Regina Leader-Post. “I just love playing. I didn’t want to miss out on a last opportunity to play with guys like Asher Hastings, Austin Millard, Brett Selinger and Ryan Apperley.” Selinger said “I’ve got to commend him for being out there. We all really appreciate him giving us support. It’s a big confidence-booster for all of us to see him out there. If any of us are having a tough game and are missing our shots, we know he’s going to grab the rebounds for us. He’s like a safety blanket. It’s good to know Pocko is there for us.” The Monarchs also included Brett Selinger.

In the bronze medal match, the Regina Martin Monarchs defeated the Meadow Lake Carpenter Spartans 66-60 as Dillan Pollock and Asher Hastings each scored 18. Dean Villeneuve paced Meadow lake with 19. Matt Spence added 13. The Spartans took an early lead but Martin chipped away, moving ahead in the final quarter and pulling away down the stretch. “We just couldn’t put the nail in the coffin, so to speak. We couldn’t get ahead by 15 or 20,” Spartans coach Tim Johnstone said. “We had lots of good looks and good opportunities, but the ball would just rattle around the rim and pop back out.” Although the losses were frustrating, Johnstone said that the season was a successful one. “We’re happy to be a top four team,” he said. “We were a little disappointed, but in the long run we will look back on it as a successful season.”
