Fort Qu’Appelle stormed to a 39-14 lead after a quarter by hitting six treys. The Lakers led 55-34 at the half and 68-47 after three quarters. Jordan James paced Regina Martin with 12. The Greenall Balgonie Griffins crushed the Yorkton Sacred Heart Saints 70-53 as Parker Butterfield scored 22. Dane Waldal added 16. Jody Wyntonyk paced Sacred Heart with 17. Sacred Heart led 29-28 at the half.
In the last quarterfinal, the Melfort Comets whipped the Regina Usher Unicorns 70-50. The Comets took an early 15-point lead and were never threatened. The Unicorns included Diphile Iradukunda, Derek Sebastian, Tyler Gunstenson, Colin Ross, Marcus Macauley.
In the semis, the Fort Qu’Appelle Bert Fox Lakers throttled the Caronport Cougars 83-60. The Lakers dominated the second half. “We’d like to keep it going,” said guard Kenton Hamilton. “As long as we play like we can, we have a good shot.” Chris Mish led Fort Qu’Appelle with 16. Tanner White added 10. Warren Moffat led the Cougars with 17. Matt Adams added 13. The Cougars also included Josh Fawcett.
In the other semi, the Greenall Balgonie Griffins defeated the Melfort Comets 53-32 as Dane Waldal scored 16. Egiroh Omene added 12. Darren Taylor led the Comets with 16. Jared Braun added 5.
In the bronze medal match, the Caronport Cougars edged the Melfort Comets 58-55 as Cody Bourdages scored 20 and Warren Moffat 18. Darren Taylor paced Melfort with 22. Ryley Malberg added 21.
In the final, the Fort Qu’Appelle Bert Fox Lakers waxed the Regina Balgonie Greenall Griffins 74-51 as 6-5 forward Chris Mish scored 25 and Craig Kinvig 17. Dane Waldal paced Balgonie with 17. Parker Butterfield added 12. The Lakers took a double-digit lead quickly and never looked back. They led 31-7 after one quarter but then went cold in the second frame. Still Balgonie was only able to trim the margin to 35-16 at the half. Mish hit a buzzer beating trey at the three-quarter mark to give Fort Qu’Appelle a 55-20 lead and they coasted to the easy win. The win gave the Lakers their third title in three different divisions in four years. They won the 2A crown in 2002 and the 3A title in 2004. They also won a bronze in 2003 in the 2A division. Chris Mish told the Regina Leader-Post that “if you could end your high school career any way you wanted, that was the way. It’s bittersweet. I’ll look back on our last game as being really emotional. Just experiencing Hoopla and everything that comes with it was a highlight. It was special to have so many fans watching. We’re not from the city and we don’t get 200 to 300 fans a game.”
