In the Regina city semis: …………………………………………………… The McGuigan Mustangs stomped the Usher Unicorns 76-43 as James Markewich scored 28 and Ken Pistotnik 21. Pistotnik told the Regina Leader-Post that “we really came to play tonight. We worked hard and we weren’t going to be denied. … We worked hard on our press all week in practice. We really hustled out there and made things happen.” The full-court press hounded the Unicorns into a raft of miscues.” McGuigan coach Darrell Pustus said “our press is an effective weapon. In our last meeting with Usher, we weren’t executing some of the technical aspects properly. What we did in practice was reviewed what we were trying to accomplish and tightened up the pressure on the court. That was the big difference. … We were all pumped up for this game. It was close all the way through. We got up by 19 points in the second half but they did a good job of coming back. They didn’t quit. We played a good all-around game. The guys were really ready to play. We concentrated on blocking out and taking away the backside stuff, which really killed us the last time we played them. The truth is, this was the most intense the guys have been in a long time. I guess the playoffs do that to you.” The Blues also included Jim Bissett, Scott Hatcher. …………………………………………………… In the final, the McGuigan Mustangs edged the Central Gophers 59-54 as Ken Pistotnik scored 18. Roger Smith led the Gophers with 18. The Mustangs led 28-26 at the half. Mustangs guard James Markewich told the Regina Leader-Post that “we were thinking it was going to be close. We’ve played these guys three times in tournaments this year and all the games were pretty close. They were decided by only a few baskets. But they’ve beaten us the past three times, so that win is pretty sweet.” Weyburn coach Gary Frederickson said “I thought our guys played a super game, especially in that first half. But in the second half, McDougall took charge. In our previous games against them, he wasn’t that much of a factor, so we weren’t keying on him. But he was unreal today.” Rogowski said “we try to play a control game. We try to take control of the ball and speed up the game. We get running and get it into the big guy and that’s how we get going.”
