In the Regina city quarterfinals: …………………………………………………… The Miller Marauders whipped the Thom Trojans 64-35 as Terry Eisler scored 20 and Tim Fogarty 14. Marauders coach Bernie Schmidt told the Regina Leader-Post that “I was worried going into this one. We were going to have to start two guys (because Rob Gosselin had been benched for missing a practice and Tim Fogarty had a broken hand) and we ended up going with three guards. (Terry) Eisler had a really good game and so did Tim (Fogarty). We weren’t too sure how he’d be.” Trojans coach Dale Wilde said “it wasn’t much of game. We had a very bad first few minutes and we couldn’t turn it around. (Warren) Ponesak and Fogarty did a super job of blocking us out. Fogarty played very well and if he was hurting, it didn’t show.” Alan McEachern, Rick Hawrysh and Loring Lascue each scored 8 to pace the Trojans. Our kids were ready for it. We were shooting in the 50s in the first half and we didn’t get an offensive rebound in the second half. We just fast broke so well. It’s a nice change for LeBoldus. The past two years we’ve always been denied in the semi-finals. The kids wanted it really badly.” Tartans coach Glenn Szabo said “we set our goal for the provincials and we were peaking but we ran into a hot team. And we didn’t get the boards. But the kids never quit. … These kids have nothing to hang their heads about. They gave it their best shot.” The Tartans (coached by Glenn Szabo) also included Terry Cochrane, Tom Yarnton, Gord Marceca, Chris Yee. …………………………………………………… In the final, the Dr. Martin LeBoldus Golden Suns dispatched the Archbishop M.C. O’Neill Titans 72-66 as Mark Benesh scored 19, Tom Nichols 15, Aaron Murzyn 13, Casey 11, Holzer 10 and Boychuk 4. The Golden Suns height proved the difference, along with Titan foul trouble, almost from the start. Titan coach Al Collins said “we didn’t shoot well enough. We had lots of opportunities but the fouls hurt us.” Golden Suns coach Howie Schweitzer said “I don’t think we played too well. We turned the ball over too many times but cool heads prevailed. I’ve got total team dedication.” Frank Macera led the Titans with 19. Derrick Duczek added 18, Rob Palmerin 12, Larry Geni 6, Gerald Zimmer 5, Brian Zimmer 4 and K Duczek 2, while Grant Jakubowski was scoreless.

Dave Ostertag paced the Crusaders with 27. Kurt Wilchuk added 10. John Dewar led the Huskies with 15. Rich Hallson added 8 and Dave Derkson 8. Crusaders coach Dave Hardy told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix “that’s two playoff games by one point in two days. I don’t know if I can take any more of this but I’ll tell you, I’ll sure take tonight’s win. We were in first place last year and we got knocked out. So tonight kind of makes up for last year.” Cowboys coach Ian Mirtle said “we took too many cheap fouls at the wrong time. Those fouls hurt us. They really hurt us. They also outboarded us. They really did a super job on the boards. They were getting two and three shots off rebounds and we weren’t getting any.” …………………………………………………… In the other semi, the Evan Hardy Souls clipped Aden Bowman Bears 57-50 as Paul Humbert scored 16 and Rory Bashnik 13. Spero Kokonas paced the Bears with 13. Kevin Thurston added 12. …………………………………………………… In the final, the Evan Hardy Souls dispatched the Holy Cross Crusaders 58-46 as Paul Humbert scored 20 and Darryl Wacker 8. The Souls led 28-17 at the half. Jim Ostertag paced the Crusaders with 16. Dave Ostertag added 14. Souls coach Ross Wilson told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix “I’m really excited. We’ve been together now as a team for three years and we’ve really put it together. Tonight’s win was a total team effort. Both our veteran posts fouled out early and we had to send two of the younger guys in there and they did the job.” Crusaders coach Dave Hardy said “I was confident going into the game, except that Jekyll & Hyde thing. We haven’t been able to put two games together since Christmas; we play well and win one, then we play poorly and lose the next. Tonight was no different; we just continued with our Jekyll & Hyde routine. … We knew we would have to rebound and we didn’t do it. We had only nine rebounds in the first half. Offensively, the ball just wouldn’t drop for us. We were only 4-16 from the line in the first half and I don’t think we were any better in the last half. Hardy is a tough team to come back against. They don’t panic or throw the ball away.”

Golden Suns coach Howie Schweitzer told the Regina Leader-Post that “our turnovers were cut down tremendously from the last game. We’ve been working on it and they weren’t playing as aggressively. The kids knew we’d be up against a tough ball team. I thought it was a much cleaner game, a much cleaner, better brand of basketball.” Titans coach Al Collins said “no shooters. We had them last night (in the semis) but not tonight. That’s the way it goes.”
