Spelliscy nailed two bombs in the final minutes to play to give Miller a 68-65 lead. Marauders coach Bernie Ripplinger, who retired after the season, told the Regina Leader-Post that “this was certainly a big win for us. Although we were provincial winners once, Miller had never won a city championship. They (the Trojans) have nothing to be ashamed of, let me tell you. They’re a terrific team, a team with a lot of heart. We were just fortunate enough to get the breaks and make those shots when they really counted. … I’ll tell you, thank God for that kid J.D.. He had just a great night. I think he made his first three shots and only took a couple more after that. But the biggest two he’s ever made came right there at the end. They were waiting for us to go to our big men and left J.D. open. Boy, did he come through in the clutch.” Spelliscy said “I just don’t put up that many shots but I had to because they were waiting for Gary (Frank) and Murray (Ell). We wanted this one very badly. We tried not to think ahead and worry about Saskatoon. That’s the way we play them, just one at a time.” Trojan Paul Kelly said “we couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn tonight. They played very well and got the breaks they needed. Frank was good and Spelliscy couldn’t miss.” The Marauders finished 15-1 in the regular season. When he’s in there, he makes things happen.” Hugh Saunders led the Marauders with 15. Rob Irvine added 11. Marauders coach Jack Seel said “I used all our players but they just tired out.” The Marauders also included Todd Wellman, Bob Woods, Ross Smith, Don Jenkins, Pete Loubardeas, Frank Simon, Garth Meldrum. …………………………………………………… In the other semi, the 2nd-seeded E.D. Rawlyk was a big difference.” …………………………………………………… In the final, the Mount Royal Mustangs defeated the E.D. Feehan Trojans 64-58 as Mark Rawlyk scored 24, Warren Hofer 14 and Michael Patola 8. Mustangs coach Nick Patola told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix that he was “disappointed. We just weren’t ready mentally.” Mount Royal led 28-23 at the half and took command with a 9-0 run early in the second half. Brian Guran led the Trojans with 21. Barry Rawlyk added 19 and Mark Huber 7. Trojans coach Brian Carduner said “Brian (Guran) and Barry (Rawlyk) played exceptionally well.”
In the provincial semis, the Regina Miller Marauders defeated the Saskatoon E.D. Feehan Trojans 66-51. A late 6-0 run in the first half gave Miller a 26-20 lead at the break. A quick 8-0 run to open the second half gave Miller a 38-24 lead. Feehan coach Brian Gardner told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix “we just came out flat and really played bad against their height. We shot 26% in the first half. I can’t remember any time this year that our shooting was in the 20s. We only made one easy basket under the hoop all night while they must have had at least 20-plus in layups.” Murray Ell led Miller with 22 points. Gary Frank added 16 and guard Franz Hoffman 16. Grade 10 guard Mark Hulser led Feehan with 14 points. Barry Rawlyk scored 12 on 5-27 from the floor including 1-11 in the first half. Brian Guran scored 12 and Dave Nahachewsky 7. Miller coach Bernie Ripplinger said “I felt that we had too much height for them. We got our guys inside and made the layups. I don’t think they could cope with our zone. We got into foul trouble and had to switch on defence and after that, we didn’t give them the second and third shots.”
In the other semi, Mark Rawlyk scored 24, primarily from the perimeter, as the Saskatoon Mount Royal Mustangs defeating the Regina Thom Trojans 69-60. Thom coach Al Ford told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix that “Rawlyk really got hot for them. His man played him as well as he could. But Rawlyk still hit about six in a row from the top of the key.” Mount Royal was ahead 17-8 early when Thom went on a 10-0 run to take the lead. Mount Royal led 30-26 at the half. Coach Nick Patola told the Regina Leader-Post that “we died for spells. We gave the ball away too much when we really needed it – turnovers that could’ve influenced the outcome of the game. We were standing still receiving passes. That was why the passes were intercepted. Anyway, we’ll take the win as it is.” Rawlyk nailed five bombs to give Mount Royal a 48-34 lead with 13:30 to go. Thom narrowed the gap to eight. Mount Royal moved back ahead by 14 and it was all but game over. With Mount Royal leading 66-50, Thom center Brent Molnar rallied his team to within six with a minute to go but the outcome was never really in doubt. Patola said “we really choked at the end. It was only Mark’s shooting that kept us in there.” Warren Hofer added 14 for Mount Royal. Garry Beckie scored 13 and Bruce Guenter 10. Brent Molnar paced Thom with 24. Gord Mellor added 10 while Ken Mann and Dale Daniels each scored 8.
In the bronze medal match, the Regina Thom Trojans dispatched the Saskatoon E.D. Feehan Trojans 69-61 as Ken Mann scored 16, Dale Daniels 13, Paul Kelly 12, Brent Molnar 10 and Gord Mellor 10. The Trojans (coached by Brian Carduner) also included Mark Rawlyk, Ken Huber, Tony Hnatiuk, Larry Hnatiuk, Dave Kowaluk, Mark Huber, Ray Hnatiuk. Ken Mann scored six unanswered points to knot the score at 34 at the half. Trojans coach Al Ford told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix that “I thought we played a lot better last night but third place is still better than fourth. It’s tough to play for third for either team. Your goal is to make the provincial finals. I thought we go some debatable breaks under the basket near the end of the game. Ken Mann and Paul Kelly played very well. In fact, Mann kept us in the game in the second half with his scoring.” Feehan coach Brian Carduner said “we shot a lot better tonight (40% from the floor and 75% from the line) but we had too many turnovers in the second half. They got hot when they needed it. When were up 52-48, they scored 11 straight points. Guran and Rawlyk gave their hearts but it just wasn’t there for us.”
In the final, the Regina Miller Marauders defeated the Saskatoon Mount Royal Mustangs 61-51. Mount Royal led 41-35 when Garry Beckie fouled out. A minute later, Mark Rawlyk and Bryce McRae each picked up their fourth foul. Eight minutes later, Miller had scored 14 straight points, including 12 by guard Franz Hoffman to pull ahead 49-41. By then, Mount Royal guard Michael Patok had also picked up his fourth foul and the game was essentially over. Mount Royal coach Nick Patola later told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix that “it became, after a time, a kind of catch-up game, with some kids in foul trouble, we weren’t in a position to play catch-up. While we were emotionally choking-up, they were gaining confidence.” The squad had also had trouble against zones all year. Mount Royal was ahead for the entire first half and led 32-27 heading into the lockers. Miller opened the second half with a 6-0 run. Miller coach Bernie Ripplinger said “our zone is our bread and butter. We knew that if we could keep close at the half, we had them. …It was a complete total team effort. Every kid played his heart out.” Gary Frank scored 21 for Miller. Franz Hoffman added 20. Warren Hofer led Mount Royal with 19. Mark Rawlyk added 12 and Garry Beckie 8. Mustangs coach Nick Patola told the Regina Leader-Post that “when we went into their zone, I knew we were in trouble. We just couldn’t manipulate it. In fact, we haven’t been successful against a zone all year.”
