In the provincial final, the Saskatoon Bedford Road Redmen became the first school to double as provincial boys and girls champ since the tournament was inaugurated in 1944. Bedford Road defeated Regina Central 67-56. The teams started slowly with Central scoring the first bucket of the game five minutes into the contest. Central led 15-11 at the quarter. Bedford Road was ahead 28-25 at the half. Scot Baillie fed Kirk Belinski for a field goal to open the second half and Central deflated after that. Bedford Road moved ahead 40-33 at the three-quarter mark and opened the final frame with an 8-0 run to build an insurmountable 53-39 lead. Central fouled to catch up but Bedford Road hit their free throws down the stretch. Bedford Road coach Merv Houghton, who retired after the season, said “what’s really remarkable about this team is that we really didn’t have a chance. After losing to Regina (Central during a midseason tournament) @ BRIT this year, I didn’t think we had a hope but the boys proved me wrong. They just decided they wanted it and they took it.” Central coach Jon Cox said his team got rattled. “We weren’t used to being down and the home-court fans got on their senses.” Baillie led Bedford Road with 24. Axel Fischer added 14 and Kirk Belinski 13. Ron Morris held Thom Parker to 15 points for Central. Ron Strilaeff added 11 and Brian Von Hagen 9. Bedford Road finished (19-3) on the season.
