The Monarchs led 20-4, 32-16 and 52-25 at the quarters. Monarchs coach Gord Burgess told the Regina Leader-Post that “the guys hustled and scored well from the outside. (Gary) White did a good job defensively on the Lions only tall man (Rod Hilderman), which helped a lot.” Ralph Sommerfeld paced the Lions with 15. Rod Hilderman added 11. The Lions also included Keith Merrifield, Dennis Powers, Carl Tiefenbach, Greg Mader. …………………………………………………… The Sheldon-Williams Spartans stomped the Miller Marauders 68-44 as Jamie Campbell scored 19, Pete Broderick 13 and Kurt Pelzer 12. The Spartans hit 18-28 from the line, while the Marauders were 10-23. Spartans coach Lorne Aston told the Regina Leader-Post that “they used a full-court press and forced us to fast break, which kept us away from our game plan. They were with us until the five 8 minutes, but our shooting improved in the fourth quarter to turn the tide.” Glen Novak led the Marauders with 13. Lenny Brhelle added 9 and Greg Taylor 9. …………………………………………………… The Central Gophers dusted the Campion Maroons 58-39 as Terry Yemen scored 15 and Darryl Diamond 14. Tartans coach Wilf Foss told the Regina Leader-Post that “fouls hurt them (the Trojans). … With two players out and the fact that (Lorne) Hubick needed only one more foul before he was out helped us. But our guys never gave up. They kept working.” Lorne Hubick paced the Trojans with 21. Karl Langmaier added 15. The Trojans (coached by Al Ford) also included Mark Kellendonk, Carl Langmeier. …………………………………………………… In the semis, the Martin Monarchs edged the Campbell Tartans 57-54 in double overtime. The tide turned in Martin’s favour with two fouls and two turnovers, leading to two buckets, in the final minute of play. Monarchs coach Gord Burgess told the Regina Leader-Post “we had to use a man-to-man defence to stop their long shots. Gophers can hit well from outside the key area and we had to bother them and force quick shots. We were able to make the type of shot we wanted throughout the game but they just wouldn’t go in until the second half.” Gophers coach Ron Lancaster said “they out-muscled us on the boards. We didn’t play well enough to turn the tide.” Terry Yemen paced the Gophers with 22. Cameron Van Druff added 11. But Koback scored 12 in the fourth quarter to rally Bedford Road, including a field goal with two minutes to play to move Bedford Road ahead 44-41. He then added a free throw. Ron McKay responded with a bucker for Martin and a free throw to narrow the lead to 45-44. But Barkman fed Puttick, who fed Kuback for a bucket. Coach Merv Houghton noted “the turning point came early in the fourth quarter after we put on a half-court zone press. The press upset their smooth style of ball, enabling us to throw them off balance. By the time the smoke cleared, we had taken over the lead.” Barkman grabbed 20 boards. Bedford Road shot 17-51 from the floor and .620 from the line. Martin shot 17-45 from the floor and .400 from the line. Mike Penno paced Martin with 19 points. Ron McKay added 12. Bedford Road finished (21-3) on season. Monarchs coach Gord Burgess told the Regina Leader-Post that “our two tall men, McKay and Gary White, both had four fouls apiece and had to be careful in the fourth quarter. Our sixth and seventh men didn’t make the trip, which put a burden on the starting five.”
