In the provincial final, the Regina Central Gophers nipped Saskatoon St. Paul’s 42-39 after rallying from a seven-point deficit in third quarter. The rally was keyed by Jack Brandt, who scored 18, including a field goal and five throws in the final quarter to keep the Gophers within reach. Central had exploited St. Paul’s man-to-man defence to the tune of 11-0 to open the affair. St. Paul’s rallied to within 17-8 at the quarter and 21-20 at the half. They took their first lead at 24-22 on a Ron Lapointe bucket and later extended their lead to seven on buckets by Lapointe, Ron McCurdy and Dale Prokoff before the Gophers rallied back. Walt Weimer replied with two long field goals for Central. Lapointe hit a bucket to give St. Paul’s a 31-26 lead before Brandt hit a pair of free throws to cut the margin to 33-30 at the three-quarter mark. A Brandt free throw and a Bob Harvey field goal tied the game at 33. Brandt hit a pair of free throws to put Central back in the lead before St. Paul’s countered with field goals by Prokoff and McCurdy. Prokoff later tied at 39 with long bucket before Al Ford hit the winning field and 6-4 forward Harvey iced it with a free throw. Ford scored 12 for Central, including the game winner. Walt Weimer added 6. Art Battiste led St. Paul’s with 12. LaPointe added 8, McCurdy 7, Prokoff 6 and Robert McNeill 6. Central hit 16-25 from the line, while St. Paul’s hit 8-18.
