Primeau told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix that all she could think of was “we need to score really fast here.” The Guardians Cara Misskey bounced a long trey off the rim as the buzzer sounded. “It was a very intense game – very back and forth – and very dramatic at the end,” said Bears coach Marci Halseth. “It’s really nice when your Grade 12’s hit such big shots at such important times. You want to get the ball in the hands of your playmakers and Katie responded when she needed to – she’s cold as ice. Not very many people can do that at that point in a game.” The Bears led 17-15 after one quarter. The Guardians led 34-29 at the half and by as many as 12 before the Bears went on a 19-7 run to knot the score at 52 midway through the final quarter. “Their press caused us a little bit of issues,” said Guardians coach Meagan Koroll. “I think with (our) young team it comes down to, staying calm, things like that, which I think we’ll get better at. And we did a great job. I can only be proud of my kids.” Katie Primeau led the Bears with 18. Haley Poier added 14. Meliah Schwitzer paced the Guardians with 16. Cara Misskey added 15.

Gage Grassick, Payton Izsak and Mackenzie Emmerson each scored 12 to pace the Crusaders. Alex Soyko added 10. “I think we were just so ready and so excited to play for our fans,” Crusaders Grade 10 guard Gage Grassick told Prince Albert Now. “It’s crazy to see the amount of support we got. It was so awesome; the atmosphere was crazy. We were so ready to play.” Crusaders coach Jenn Ferguson said “I have a lot of adrenaline running through my body right now. Of course, I’m proud of the kids. There were times I thought I lost my composure a bit, so I was really proud of them for being able to stay engaged and stay in the moment and not follow my lead this time and actually stay composed.” Ferguson said the squad had worked hard on improving its rebounding. “That was definitely a weakness of ours early in the season, when we lost a couple two-point games early, I think a lot could have been attributed to a lack of rebounding ability. So we focused on that all year, just having a nose for the ball and knowing where it’s going to go… We knew from watching film on Riffel that if we could control the boards, we’d have a pretty good shot at winning too.” Kennedy Hollinger led the Royals with 17. The Royals (coached by Cymone Bernauer) also included Brooke Ducharme, Olivia Ell, Payton Huber, Kristen Wilson, Meger, Barfuss, Carter, Fox, Gibb, Hardy, Holland, Nish, Nunn, Smith, Wolsey and Coghill.

In the semis, the Saskatoon Aden Bowman Bears edged the Prince Albert Carlton Crusaders 65-60 after leading 32-31 at the half. Ashley de Souza Martens paced the Bears with 16. Gage Grassick led the Crusaders with 16. “I couldn’t be prouder of how hard they played,” Crusaders coach Jenn Ferguson told Prince Albert Now. “We couldn’t sink a basket it seemed early, a lot of our shots weren’t going in and that allowed
[the Bears]
to start believing they could win, I think. We started to turn it on later, but we couldn’t find that extra gear when we needed it. They played super hard. That’s a really good team; so are we, and now we have a job to do tomorrow. It’s not what we wanted but we’ll be back here ready to go.” The Bears led 32-31 at the half but the Crusaders effectively attacked off the dribble. “That’s something we like to focus on because we are so quick, and that was something that we did well,” Ferguson said. “We kinda got away from it there in the third quarter a little bit and we tried to get them to go back to it, it took a little while. [The Bears] made some great defensive plays too, stole the ball when we were driving and that made us tentative to try it again. They did everything right. I told the girls, we didn’t lose that game, they won.” The Bears led 44-43 after three quarters but opened the final frame with a 7-0 run. Grassick rallied the Crusaders to within 63-60 but Haley Poier iced it for the Bears with a pair of free throws.

In the bronze medal match, the Prince Albert Carlton Crusaders dumped the Saskatoon Centennial Chargers 81-67 after leading 42-31 at the half. “I’m so proud of them, it’s a really tough game to play in,” Crusaders coach Jenn Ferguson told Prince Albert Now. “Composure was critical today and they did a really good job. That’s a really tough team, physical and they battle hard for rebounds and they obviously got a couple of exceptional players. We just kept finding ways to answer back. I think we got a little bit in their heads and worked them over that way. It affected the outcome of the game, most definitely.” The Crusaders led 55-44 after three quarters but the Chargers opened the final frame with an 8-2 run. Taryn Izsak answered with a pair of runouts and then Payton Izsak drew an offensive foul on Chargers guard Kaitlin Jockims who fouled out of the game. “I think [Jockims] lost her composure with the tight defence we were playing on her,” Ferguson said. “She was doing some trash talking on the court, so I think for our girls that felt really good to know that working together, they made that play happen. It was a turning point for sure.” Payton Iszak led the Crusaders with 26. Courtney Primeau paced the Chargers with 20. The Chargers (coached by Julene Hillis, assistant Jasmine Jay, managers Sydney Stark and Kayla Hatfield) also included Nyaluka Pouk, Tiegan Kowerchuk-Webster, Micah Bartel, Hya El-Baroudy, Karlee Soderberg, Camryn Ellis, Kaitlin Jockims, Brynn Friesen, Daria Constantinoff, Nicole Norman and Mckenna MacLeod.
In the final, the Regina Dr. Martin LeBoldus Golden Suns whipped the Saskatoon Aden Bowman Bears 63-47 after leading 39-25 at the half. Ella Farthing paced the Golden Suns with 19. Anna Wiebe led the Bears with 14. “I’m so excited,’’ Farthing told the Prince Albert Daily Herald. “It was such a good experience. My whole team had so much fun, especially because we’re so young and we only have one Grade 12 on our team. It’s a huge accomplishment that we won provincials in Prince Albert. … “We came ready to play and usually we don’t come for the full 40 minutes,’’ Farthing said. “We were energized for the full 40 minutes and we were all in for the game.’’
