In the final, the Campbell Tartans edged the Dr. Martin LeBoldus Suns 52-48. The Tartans took control in the final frame, despite trailing 20-11, 33-24 and 46-35 at the quarters. “We’re definitely very excited,” the Tartans’ Jayda Watson told the Regina Leader-Post. “At the half, there were probably a lot of people in the crowd, or even on our team, with doubts. We really wanted it and we came out in the second half and showed that.” Campbell outscored LeBoldus 17-2 to start the fourth quarter with a series of steals. “It was really nerve-racking at the beginning,” Watson said. “I was so nervous, and I think everyone was really nervous going in.” Watson, who scored seven in the final frame, added that the team was determined to avenge a loss to the Suns in a midseason tournament. “That kind of drove us. We wanted to play them again and win.” After Karley Romanuk scored the Golden Suns’ only basket of the fourth quarter, Watson nailed two treys, including one that gave Campbell a 49-48 lead with 58.2 seconds left, and then pilfered the ball with 2.8 seconds to play. Shinelle Handziuk paced the Tartans with 14. Christina McCusker added 12 and Watson 12. Zayn Dornstauder led LeBoldus with 17. Erin Taylor added 10.
In the provincial quarterfinals, the Regina Campbell Tartans dumped the Saskatoon Aden Bowman Bears 72-56. The Tartans were fired up after being prevented from participating in Hoopla in 2013 because of a blizzard. “It was especially hard for the Grade 12s,” Shinelle Handzuik, who was in Grade 11 at the time, told the Regina Leader-Post. “It was frustrating for all of us, but it was tough for me because I’m such a competitive person. At Hoopla, anything can happen – a fourth (seed) can beat a first – and that’s what keeps us going. This year’s Grade 12s are really motivated. It’s our first and only Hoopla, so we want to do well.” The Tarns led 20-14 after one quarter and then broke the game open with a 14-4 run. Christina McCusker paced the Tartans with 23.
