In the last quarterfinal, the Regina Sheldon-Williams Spartans clubbed Saskatoon Bishop James Mahoney Saints 71-37 as Sara Petrovitch scored 22 and Desiree Ates 12. Sheldon-Williams led 46-26 at the half. The Spartans ripped off a 19-0 run to take command. “You could tell that they wanted to win tonight,” Spartans co-coach Laura Hunko told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix. “They were diving on the floor for some loose balls, and they were finishing their shots.” Sarah Petrovitch said “We came out a bit sluggish, but as the game progressed our team came together. We started running our offence and playing great defence. That’s what pulled us ahead of the other team . . . Our team started to click, we began seeing the open man, avoiding turnovers, and playing smart.” The opening quarter had the two teams trading blows to mixed results. Robyn Knight of the Saints drained consecutive three-pointers to narrow a lopsided Spartan lead to one point. The Saints followed with a field goal, taking their only lead of the game 14-13. “We came out a bit sluggish, but as the game progressed our team came together,” said Spartans starter Sarah Petrovitch. “We started running our offence and playing great defence.” The Spartans chopped the Saints down with the power of a battle axe near the end of the first quarter, going on a 19-0 run. “Our team started to click,” said Petrovitch. “We began seeing the open man, producing turnovers and playing smart.” Petrovitch was big. The six-foot senior grabbed rebounds, blocked shots, made steals and nailed shots from long range. “She played very well,” said Spartans coach Laura Hunko, “She was even hitting some threes.” By halftime the Spartans were up 37-21. Sheldon-Williams’ aggressive full-court press and potent fast break continued to wreak havoc on the Saints in the second half. “You could tell that they wanted to win tonight,” said Hunko. “They were diving on the floor for some loose balls and they were finishing their shots.” “I think that we are going to come out stronger tomorrow, since we got this game out of our system,” said Petrovitch. “We will play our game the way that we’ve played all year.” Robyn Knight led Mahoney with 16. Chantal Hanson added 12. The Saints (coached by Dave Knight) also included Jordyn Clark, Kinesha Denny, Chrissy Frase, Chandree Gudmundson, Anna Kowaluk, Rebecca Loran, Jill Maier, Chandra Medel, Leanne Mylymok, Brittany Shockey, Leigh Thorinson.

In the semis, Regina LeBoldus defeated the Regina Campbell Tartans 80-71. LeBoldus led 42-33 at the half. “(The third-place finish at cities) took the pressure off us,” 6-foot-2 LeBoldus post Taryn Wicijowski told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix after pouring in 29 points against Regina’s city champions. “We knew nobody would really be expecting us to go to the final because there was already two teams ahead of us in our city. It made us more calm coming into these games.” Both teams were part of a massive Regina sweep this week — all four schools from that city dumped their Saskatoon counterparts during Thursday’s quarter-finals. The lopsided scores showcased a growing hoop divide between Saskatchewan’s biggest cities. Regina also swept Saskatoon last season. LeBoldus coach Jim Gallagher said there’s a few possible reasons for Regina’s dominance. He wonders if Aden Bowman’s impressive run through Saskatoon’s hoops scene over much of the previous decade led to a drop-off by the other teams in the city. “And,” he says, “we have a very strong base in Regina at the elementary level and in the community. There’s more of an emphasis in Regina on basketball, where in Saskatoon, you see more of an emphasis on things like track. There’s a balance of different sports. LeBoldus led 25-8 10 minutes into Friday’s game and 42-33 at halftime, but scrappy Campbell grabbed a 69-64 lead with just over five minutes to play. LeBoldus outscored them 15-2 down the stretch. Aimee Hoffmann and Christina Wiegers supplemented Wicijowski’s 29 points with 19 apiece. Ali Hendren scored 15 for Campbell.

In the other semi, the Regina Sheldon-Williams Spartans whipped the Regina Winston Knoll Wolverines 52-29 as Desiree Ates scored 10. Kristen Johnson led Knoll with 6. Sheldon-Williams led 22-15 at the half.

In the bronze medal match, the Regina Campbell Tartans stomped the Regina Winston Knoll Wolverines 87-39 as Stephanie Kaczmer scored 17. Rhea White led Knoll with 10. Campbell led 40-26 at the half. The Wolverines (coached by Leah Levy) also included Kailee Eger, Kyla Hosie, Kristen Johnson, Leah Klumpp, Darby Kuntz, Amy McFarlen, Nicole McKinnon, Jennifer Pearce, Becky Pettigrew, Megan Semeniuk, Sonja Soubolsky, Haley Williams.

In the final, the Regina Sheldon-Williams Spartans defeated the Regina LeBoldus Golden Suns 69-61. “It just feels amazing,” said Spartans guard Geneva Murphy, who scored 16 points for Sheldon. Rayna Belyk also had 16 points. “We’ve been working for this since Day 1, since Grade 9. We’ve always had a strong team. This year we just had to put all the pieces together and we did it.” The key? Containing LeBoldus star post player Taryn Wicijowski, who scored 18 points. “We knew that Taryn was going to be their go-to girl, so we had to shut her down and we did a pretty good job of that tonight,” said Murphy. Leah Matthewson chipped in with 14 for LeBoldus. “It’s pretty majestic, actually,” said Spartans coach Laura Hunko. “The girls had an outstanding game. They wanted it. They’ve wanted this all year. Getting the ball inside — we’re a lot bigger than them — and pushing the ball (up the court were key). They couldn’t run with us and that was a huge key to the game.”
