In the provincial quarterfinals, the Regina city champion Dr. Martin LeBoldus Golden Suns defeated Saskatoon Marion Graham Falcons 83-58 as Taryn Wicijowski scored 20. “Last year, we were kind of the underdog and nobody really expected us to do what we did,” (i.e., upset two undefeated teams to win the provincial title. Erin Hubenig told the Regina Leader-Post. “I like both (situations, underdog and team to beat). There’s less pressure when you’re chasing other people. When you’re the underdog, you have nothing to lose. Either way, it’s a good feeling.” Tracy Holloway led the Falcons with 10. Jean Holloway added 8. The Falcons (coached by Erin Brimacombe) also included Anna Bunton, Olja Vanovic, Morgan Sawatzky, Marika Hunter, Tracey Holloway, Kelsey Bates, Taylor Wilson, Andrea Cessna, Krystin Therens, Jessica Start, Miranda Ollenberg.
The Regina Campbell Tartans defeated the Saskatoon St. Joseph Guardians 56-44 as Sara Hudson scored 14 and Stacey Kaczmer 12. Morgan Wingate led St. Joseph’s with 12. Amanda Fortin added 8. The Regina Balfour Redmen defeated the Saskatoon Aden Bowman Bears 69-54 as Brittany Read scored 28 and Sihen Berhe 14. Amy Lackie led the Bears with 13. Riley Humbert and Katie Butler each added 12. In the last quarterfinal, the Regina Sheldon-Williams Spartans dumped the Saskatoon Holy Cross Crusaders 74-62 as Mary Hipperson scored 15 and Steph Rathwell 14 while completing the Queen City sweep of Saskatoon. “It was huge day for Regina,” Hipperson told the Regina Leader-Post. “I’ve played against the Regina girls all of my life and to see them all in the semifinals was a huge accomplishment.” Meagan Koroll led Holy Cross with 21. Randi Charko added 12. The Crusaders also included Brittany Bodnar, Jen Knibbs, Dayna Berry, Kylie Boire, Alyssa Harbidge, Kelsey Hewitt, Natalie Jarrett, Lisa Koroll, Lauren Lichtenwald, Monique Vezina, Megan Zioloski.
In the semis, the Regina Dr. Martin LeBoldus Golden Suns dumped the Regina Campbell Tartans 90-72 as Taryn Wicijowski scored 27 and Erin Hubenig 22. Sydney Laughlin and Sarah Hudson each scored 18 to pace Campbell.
In the other semi, the Regina Sheldon-Williams Spartans defeated the Regina Balfour Redmen 76-51 as Mary Hipperson scored 19 and Katie Campbell 12. Brittany Read led Balfour with 24. Kristin Foote added 7. “It feels good to get there,” Hipperson told the Regina Leader-Post. “I’ve always come to the high school and provincial finals and looked up to the girls who were playing. It’s great to be there, too.”
In the bronze medal match, the Regina Balfour Redmen defeated the Regina Campbell Tartans 78-75 as Brittany Read scored 40 and Kayla Morgan 13. Sarah Hudson paced Campbell with 21. Becky Newhouse added 15. The Tartans also included Stacey Kaczmer, Solveig Nilson.
In the final, the Regina Dr. Martin LeBoldus Golden Suns nipped the Regina Sheldon-Williams Spartans 51-49 as Erin Hubenig scored 16 and Porscha Fordham 12. Lindsay Ledingham led Sheldon-Williams with 16. Steph Rathwell added 12. Graduating seniors Porscha Fordham and Erin Hubenig were elated by their second consecutive provincial title. “I’m sad that it’s over but I least I can look back with no regrets,” Hubenig told the Regina Leader-Post. “There aren’t any, ‘If we had done this we could have gone there.’ This as good as it gets.” Fordham said “we were hoping to win the city and provincial titles,” said Fordham. “It’s pretty exciting to do it.” The LeBoldus Golden Suns led 6-5 after the first quarter but the Spartans rebounded to grab a 19-15 lead at the half. Sheldon-Williams was able to turn the tide in its favour because Hubenig had been sidelined for the final 12 minutes of the first half with three fouls. She returned to the court for the second half and fired up the Golden Suns’ offence. The Golden Suns hit on five of six three-point attempts, including three treys by Hubenig, to take a 39-34 lead. “I was so worried when she got the third foul,” Fordham said. “She is such an amazing player and she means so much to our team.” The run sparked a frantic and heated fourth quarter between the teams. The Spartans tied the contest with five minutes left at 42-42. Hubenig hit consecutive baskets to give LeBoldus Golden Suns a 46-42 lead before Steph Rathwell tied the contest at 49-49 with a layup for the Spartans. Rathwell committed a foul on the Golden Suns’ next possession, which sent Fordham to the line. Fordham sank one of two free throws, which provided LeBoldus Golden Suns with a 50-49 lead. Meaghan Schweiger connected with another free throw with five seconds left to give LeBoldus Golden Suns a 51-49 advantage. The Spartans pressed for the tying basket but came up short. “We’ve played against those girls since Grade 5 so we know how everybody plays,” said Rathwell. “They outscored us in the third quarter and that was definitely the turning point. You just wish you could go back and do that one little thing over again.” Taryn Wicijowski’s grandfather had captured a provincial title in 1952, while her mother had coached the Spartans to a crown in 1992. “I’m really excited for Taryn’s team,” said Laurice Wicijowski. “They got better as the season went on.”
