In the provincial quarterfinals, held in Saskatoon, the 3rd-seeded Regina city champion Winston Knoll Wolverines crushed the 6th-seeded Swift Current Ardens 77-43. Knoll was in command from the start, jumping out to a 40-18 lead by the half. Ashley Wishira led Knoll with 16 points. Michelle Monette paced Swift Current with 10. Coach Amy Moroz put a positive spin on having the Regina regular season champs having to play in the quarterfinals. “It’s nice to get off the bus, have a game and make some plays before we go into another tough game with LeBoldus Golden Suns,” she told the Regina Leader-Post. The Wolverines dominated from start to finish, playing everyone equally. “Everyone can say they had the opportunity to play in a provincial championship,” said Moroz.
In the other quarterfinal, the 4th-seeded Saskatoon St. Joseph Guardians nipped the 5th-seeded Prince Albert Carlton Crusaders 53-50. St. Joseph coach Keely Vickaryous was proud of the way her troops responded. “It was 7-on-5 out there,” an agitated Vickaryous, who was none too pleased with how the game was called by the two officials, told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix. “But because of that, I loved the way our energy was. It was us against everyone and the girls really battled.” St. Joes took control near the end of the third when Becky Hartshorn had back-to-back steals and lay-ups to give her team a 44-35 lead, its biggest of the night. Carlton got close in the fourth, but St. Joes always stayed ahead. “We played as a team,” said Hartshorn, who scored 24. “We didn’t get some calls we wanted so we had to fight through it together.” Whitney Darchuk scored 20 for Carlton. The Crusaders also included Alycia Kaglea, Karen Glass.
In the semis, the Regina Winston Knoll Wolverines stunned Regina Dr. Martin LeBoldus Golden Suns 55-49. Knoll outscored LeBoldus Golden Suns 9-2 in the final minutes to duplicate their victory in the Regina city final. “We tried so hard just to get here. This is what we’ve been after all year,” said Ashley McDonald, who paced the Wolverines with 18 and drilled two critical jumpers during the decisive run, told the Regina Leader-Post. Ashley Wishira iced the win by hitting 3/4 from the line with Knoll leading 52-49 with 13.6 seconds remaining. Ashley Wishara added 17 for the Wolverines. Kim Tulloch paced LeBoldus Golden Suns with 14. Danielle Schmidt added 9.

The Golden Suns (coached by Jim Gallagher, assisted by Debbie Ward and Rumali Werapitiya) also included Danielle Schmidt, Julia Schmidt, Morgan Bolen.
In the final, the Saskatoon Aden Bowman Bears defeated the 3rd-seeded Regina Winston Knoll Wolverines 66-64. “Most people would have bet $100 that our game would have been a blowout,” Wolverines forward Shalyn Kivela told the Regina Leader-Post. “We were down by 14 points in the third quarter and we came back to tie the game. That’s unbelievable.” Krista Phillips, who scored 35, notched the winner with six seconds to play. Knoll had knotted the score at 64 with 34 seconds on the clock. Kivela led the Wolverines with 16. “They are a great all-around team. They have great posts and great outside shooters. It would be really tough to beat a team like that.” The Bears finished (32-0) on the season. Jill Humbert added 13 for the Bears. Ashley McDonald added 10 for the Wolverines. The Bears finished (32-0) on the season. Knoll tied the game with 34 seconds remaining. Bowman called a time-out, returned to the floor and quickly got into its offensive set, moving the ball around the perimeter against Knoll’s zone defence, working it 6-4 Phillips for the winner. “Everything we did this year was for this,” Phillips, who scored eight of Bowman’s last 10 points, told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix. Jill Humbert added that a 32-0 record is an unbelievable number to me. Winning the last game like that makes it even more unforgettable.” The plan on the final play had been to find Humbert or Stacey Boldt for a jump shot while the other three crashed the glass. Knoll ended up taking away those options so Humbert had to improvise. She got the ball with the shot clock winding down and threw a pass from the top of the key to a triple-teamed Phillips. It was high enough where only Phillips could get it, and after she initially bobbled the pass amidst traffic, she regained the handle and made the hoop. “I just wanted to get it up and score the basket,” said Phillips. Humbert said “I knew that cased it.” Knoll coach Amy Moroz felt her players did all they could on that final defensive stand. “She’s six-foot-whatever, plus some arm’s length. How do you stop it? You just have to play good defence and hopes she takes a tough shot.” Through the first half, Winston Knoll’s biggest lead was four points; Bowman’s was six. There were 14 ties or lead changes. “It was interesting to see how they play,” said Humbert. “They’re a lot like us — good shooters and strong posts inside.” Bowman appeared to have the Wolverines figured out, though, pulling away at the end of the third quarter and early in the fourth, extending a 43-42 lead to a 58-44 advantage. Everything was working — Phillips was unstoppable inside, Humbert was a menace on defence, Cara Roth was grabbing every rebound, Bowman’s 1-3-1 zone defence baffled the Wolverines. “I thought we could get a 20-point run right there,” said Bears coach Wendy Benson. “Credit Winston Knoll. They came back.” Added Phillips: “We sat on it a little bit. We let it go. We didn’t keep pushing.” Just as quickly as the Bears took control, the Wolverines made it a game once again. A 16-4 run over four minutes brought Knoll within two points. Shaylyn Kivela scored six straight. Michelle Berger scored four. Suddenly, it was 62-60. Phillips scored to extend the lead to four, but Knoll didn’t quit. Alyssa Dunn made it 64-62, and after the Wolverines got a stop on defence, Berger nailed a jumper from the top of the key to tie the game 64-64 with 34 seconds remaining. “I don’t think anyone in the gym expected us to win. We came in believing it wasn’t a given win for Aden Bowman,” said Moroz. “Then when you’re within two or tied in the last minute, it’s anyone’s game.” Wishira nearly stole a ball on Bowman’s ensuing possession but it back bounced to Humbert, who quickly regrouped. She was never flustered when the Bears’ initial play was taken away, knowing she always had Phillips. “Me and Jill trust each other,” said Phillips. Added Humbert: “I knew she was going to catch it.” The Wolverines still had six seconds but the Bears played perfect defence, never letting Knoll get a shot off. “I couldn’t help but shed a few tears of joy,” said Phillips. “I can’t believe this is happening.” Added Humbert: “I knew we could pull it off.” Added Phillips: “We had to earn this win. We proved why we are the provincial champs.”
