In the other quarterfinal, the 3rd-seeded Saskatoon St. Joseph Guardians stomped the 6th-seeded Yorkton Regional Raiders 75-26. Karen Fraser earned the hustle award for St. Joseph, making its first appearance at Hoopla. Kelsey Mayes garnered the laurels for Yorkton. The Guardians were in control from start to finish, scoring the game’s first 16 points and holding the Raiders scoreless for nearly seven minutes. They led 22-1 after one quarter. “It gets everyone in the groove,” Guardians guard Becky Hartshorn, who scored 12, told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix. “It’s a good game to start off with. Lots of fun. Everyone gets in.” The Raiders were held to just four field goals in the first 20 minutes and trailed 37-16 at the break. All 11 Guardians scored, while defensively, they limited Yorkton to just 10 points in the second half. St. Joes coach Keely Vickaryous couldn’t find a whole lot wrong with the game. “We have to hold onto this feeling. Regardless of the score, I like the way we remained intense until the end. We’ll have to bring that out again.” Aimee Leslie led St. Joes with 13 points. Karen Fraser and Carly Lawson each added 11. Amanda Shumay had seven for the Raiders.
In the semis, the Regina city champion M.A. Riffel Royals dumped the Saskatoon St. Joseph Guardians 69-51. Mallory Loire paced the Royals with 12. Karen Fraser and Rebecca Hartshorn each scored 14 to lead the Guardians.
In the other semi, the top-seeded Saskatoon Aden Bowman Bears defeated 4th-seeded Regina Winston Knoll 60-47. “It was closer than we expected and wanted,” Bears guard Amy Prokop, who scored 16, including 5 treys, told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix. “We expect teams to give up after getting down lots. They never game up.” Prokop hit a trio from beyond the arc as the Bears opened up a 20-12 lead and then moved ahead 29-21. But Knoll, playing on its home floor, rallied to within 29-26 and remained within two possessions for the rest of the quarter. But Prokop fed Krista Phillips and Kara Lackie buckets, while Kelsey Mayes and Cara Roth notched putbacks as Bowman moved ahead 49-37. Wolverine’s coach Amy Moroz said her troops were undone by defensive lapses, missed free throws and Bowman’s size. “I can’t be disappointed with the effort. The girls worked to the end. It was just a few silly mistakes.” Prokop said the Bears maintained their poise. “We felt we were always in control.” Amy Prokop led the Bears with 16 points. Ashley Wishira had 11 to lead the Wolverines.
In the bronze medal match, the Regina Winston Knoll Wolverines crushed the Saskatoon St. Joseph Guardians 82-50. “It’s a disappointing way to end the year. But we’ve got to focus on the year from start to finish,” said St. Joseph coach Keely Vickaryous. “I’m a little numb right now. I just don’t know what happened.” Joni Ager led Knoll with 10. Knoll coach Amy Moroz told the Regina Leader-Post that “not many teams get to finish their season out with a win. It’s nice to finish on some positive notes.” Amiee Leslie notched 12 for the Guardians. The Guardians (coached by Keely Vickaryous, manager Nikki Ryan, manager Jeanine Loran) also included Karen Fraser, Rebecca Hartshorn, Janelle Rode, Melissa Meacham, Catherine Lacny, Rhea Felix, Paige Farbacher, Carly Lawson, Desiree McLachlin, Janelle Rode, Vanessa Seymour, Andrea Sumner.
In the final, the Saskatoon Aden Bowman Bears whipped the Regina M.A. Riffel Royals 69-53. The Bears led by 21-6 early as their full-court pressure forced a raft of turnovers. They extended the lead to 51-39 after three quarters. But a 6-0 run brought Riffel back within eight and an irate coach Wendy Benson called a timeout. “I want my 18-point lead back,” she fumed. The Bears returned to the floor and quickly regained command with a 12-2 run. “I never felt like we didn’t have control,” Kara Lackie, who scored 13, told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix. “We were going to take that game. … It’s exactly how we dreamed it would be. I’m really proud of the team and what we’ve accomplished.” The victory capped an undefeated season. “It feels so good to finish with a bang,” said graduating guard Amy Prokop. Rookie 6-5 centre Krista Phillips added that “we’ve been looking forward to this all year. This is the big one. Doing it together is really fun.” Benson noted that her troops “rose to the occasion. They came out and played ball.” Benson added that the Bears interior defence rattled Riffel, while their quickness on the perimeter forced a raft of turnovers. “Everyone was showing leadership. That’s exciting to see.” Krista Phillips notched 13, while Cara Roth and Jill Humber were stellar defensively. Alison Lackie came off the bench to hit a big trey in the final quarter run. Riffel coach Wade Hackl said his troops failed to capitalize on their fourth quarter opportunity. “Bowman’s a good team. You have to take advantage of your chances against them when you have them.” Lindsay Lueck paced the Royals with 15. Mallory Loire added 12. Royals guard Kandace Pidskany, who scored 9, told the Regina Leader-Post that “it would have been nice if we could have pulled out that win. We came up short against Balfour last year and we couldn’t pull it out against Bowman.” Aden Bowman’s size and speed proved to be too much for the Royals to overcome. Aden Bowman’s size contributed to Riffel missing a number of layups and the Bears’ speed forced the Royals into numerous turnovers. “When you put those two things together, it’s going to hurt you,” said Royals coach Wade Hackl.
