In the Regina city quarterfinals: …………………………………………………… The Dr. Martin LeBoldus Golden Suns whipped the Balfour Redmen 66-43 as Daphne Deward scored 12 and Dawn Holzer 11. The Golden Suns led 33-24 at the half. Golden Suns coach Darlene Schmidt told the Regina Leader-Post that “it was simple to see our strong point was (Dawn) Holzer. Her play has improved tremendously and she’s doing things out there on the court I’ve never seen her do before. I think it has a lot to do with playoffs. She must like the pressure.” Redmen coach Wendy Bileski said “LeBoldus has a well-balanced attack. We found ourselves turning over the ball on a lot of occasions by forcing the bad pass and just not concentrating. I think we shot well but we couldn’t hit the mark. We didn’t quit playing, though, that’s important to our club. We battled to the end.” Balfour briefly trimmed the lead to 54-39 but Holzer and Donna Mazniak but five consecutive buckets to ice it. Holzer said “they were getting tough both defensively and offensively, so we got our fastbreak going out of our end and managed to get a few points to get our lead back.” The Redmen (coached by Wendy Bileski) included Jill Moroz, Deanna Powell, Bonnie Mearns, Donna Wood. …………………………………………………… The Archibishop M.C. O’Neill Titans dusted the Campbell Tartans 52-31 as Shelley Herback scored 10 and Karen Beitel 10. The Titans led 20-17 at the half. Denise Sparks led the Tartans with 10. Thom led 10-0 after three minutes. LeBoldus coach Darlene Schmidt told the Regina Leader-Post that “we knew at that point, we had to take control of the game and play the basketball that put us at 13-0 (in regular season play). Actually, that deficit was the best thing that happened to us out there. It made us work, gave us the incentive.” Schmidt assigned Dawn Holzer and Daphne Dewald to shut down Thom’s Jackie Moore but she kept scoring so the Golden Suns went to a zone. Raquel Torchzewski said “we had to play calmly with a relaxed but quick offence and defence. We knew she (Moore) would be hot. To win, we had to keep an eye on her at all times.” Moore, who was sidelines six weeks during the regular by an ankle injury, said “getting rebounds is my main job out there but they made it hard for me to get inside. Our game is played from the outside but LeBoldus knew that.” Thom coach Rita Nay lamented mental errors and turnovers. “We didn’t play persistently and I think we may have relied too heavily on Jackie. LeBoldus stuck to defence and waited for us to make mistakes. Being nervous for this game, we made a lot.” Jackie Moore scored 28 to lead the Trojans (coached by Rita Nay). Kelly Craig added 4, Judy Sapnuk 4, Sherry Lorenz 4, Kim Braun 2 and Bonnie Will 2. …………………………………………………… In the other semi, the Marian Saints edged the Archbishop M.C. Marian coach John MacDonald told the Regina Leader-Post that “O’Neill’s fouls help us a lot. When that bonus light went on in the second half, we took every opportunity to build our lead.” Titans coach Jim Gallagher said “we dug ourselves into a 20point difference early and came back to make it close. I’ve got to give the team a lot of credit for that.”  Karen Beitel scored 7 to lead the Titans (coached by Jim Gallagher). I like to play a defensive game but it wasn’t a priority in this one. We had so many chances to use our fastbreak, to go on offence because Saskatoon was giving up the ball a lot.”

In the bronze medal match, the Regina Marian Saints dispatched the Saskatoon Aden Bowman Bears 50-45. The Bears included Debbie Davies, Janet Ostryznik, Alayne Spafford, Crystal Torgunrud.

In the final, the Regina Dr. Martin LeBoldus Golden Suns defeated the Saskatoon Walter Murray Marauders 58-48 as Susie Rizak scored 15, Raquel Tchorzewski 14, Dawn Holzer 11. Jacquie Dust led the Marauders with 10. Chris Klassen added 10 and Sandra Quinnen 8. Golden Suns coach Darlene Schmidt told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix that “I knew we should be here. Well, maybe not should. Could. We had the potential. (Donna Makniak) is probably one of the best passers around. People in the stands watch her and ooh and aah all the time. She played with (Raquel Tchorzewski) for four years. Get those two working together, it’s beautiful. … Our offence wasn’t anything spectacular (20-58 from the floor, 18-29 from the line), just a little bit of everything.” Schmidt told the Regina Leader-post that “we had the momentum of a successful (17-0) season – an undefeated year – going for us. And each player has a winning attitude because of it. It shows the girls that all their hard work, all the practices and the time spent in basketball this year has paid off.” Marauders coach Lorraine Wright said “we underestimated the strength of LeBoldus. They’ve got strength everywhere while we have been weak in some areas. And in a game where everything is on the line, you have to be complete. … At least we know that we lost to the best.”
