In the provincial semis, the Saskatoon Aden Bowman Bears clipped the Regina Luther Lions 51-45 as Rob Smales scored 19, Brad Schoenfeld 17 and John Alonso 10. Schoenfeld told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix that “it was a tough, very scrappy kind of game, with a lot of loose balls and a lot of players hitting the floor. They stacked the inside and we did the same. They had a guy about 6-10 (James Baird) and 220 (pounds) that we had to keep out.” Brent Allison led the Lions with 11. James Baird added 10 and Terry Ross 8. Bears coach Ralph Schoenfeld told the Regina Leader-Post that “the intensity was a 10, the prettiness was a 1. … Our defensive intensity came to the fore. It had to – we weren’t doing well with the offensive game.” Allison said “we just didn’t play very well. We were just slow. It fell apart on us. Nothing seemed to work. Our shots didn’t fall. We played too streaky. You’ve got to play 40 minutes.” Lions coach Paul Humbert told the Regina Leader-Post that “if you had told me before the game that our guys were going to score 45 points, I would have laughed. We averaged 70 points a game.” Allison said “we just didn’t play very well. We were just slow. It fell apart on us. Nothing seemed to work. Our shots didn’t fall. We played too streaky. You’ve got to play 40 minutes.”

In the other semi, the Regina Campbell Tartans dusted the Saskatoon Holy Cross Crusaders 81-53 as Brian Livingston scored 24 and Mike Sharpe 18. Brent Powell led the Crusaders with 11. Kevin Leschyshyn added 10 and Tim Kroeker 9. The Tartans broke to a 27-9 lead and romped. Crusaders coach Barry Rawlyk told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix that Tartans centre Mike Sharpe “picked up a couple of cheapies underneat the basket. Physically, we couldn’t handle him. He’s 6-8 and our tallest guy is 6-3. We were in a mismatch. Then they throw guys like Brian Livingston at us. They’re not just big, they’re skilled.”

In the bronze medal match, the Saskatoon Holy Cross Crusaders dispatched the Regina Luther Lions 77-71 as Ian MacDonald scored 28, Mark Patola 20 and Tim Kroeker 11. Herman Sattler led the Lions with 12. Brent Allison added 11. The Lions (coached by Paul Humbert) also included Terry Ross, Jason Nicurity, Scott Dolff, Jason Daum, James Baird, Jon Pauls.

In the final, the Saskatoon Aden Bowman Bears nipped the Regina Campbell Tartans 66-65 as John Alonso scored 21, Brad Schoenfeld 20, Rob Smales 12, Chris Lee 8, Rob Fahr 2, Ron Davies 2 and Matt Tan 1. Mike Sharpe paced the Tartans with 21. Brian Livingston added 16, Mike Linnen 12, Russell Eby 6, Aaron Beattie 4, Steve Bowes 3, Tim Beke 2 and Neal Anderson 2. Alonso hit a trey with one second on the clocked to give the Bears a 36-35 lead at the half. Bears coach Ralph Schoenfeld told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix that “words can’t describe it. What won it? A lot of heart. They were extremely tough and that’s what makes me so much prounded. … (Alonso’s trey) was big. We won by one. That’s how big it was. Our outside shooting came through and we controlled our own backboards. We had to set the tempo and we did.”  Schoenfeld told the Regina Leader-Post that “that was as good a game as we could have against a team of Campbell’s calibred. It was tense right through. I breathed at halftime and I breathed at the end. That was it.” Alonso said “we slowed it down. They like to run a lot.” Schoenfeld said “we played our game, not theirs. We boxed them out on the boards. They have way more height than us. So that was key.” Two free throws by Rob Smales gave the Bears a 66-64 lead with 1:19 to play. Campbell missed a shot with 25 seconds to play. Tim Beke stole the ball and fed Steve Bowes, who was fouled but only hit 1-2 from the line, allowing the Bears to escape with the win. Brian Livingston said “it’s a team loss. They shot well and that limited our running game. Unless we get the steal or a rebound, we can’t run.”
