He has a feel for the game you just don’t teach. … With all of the attention other teams have been giving Dan (Farthing) and Matt (McCullogh), it’s kind of opened things up for him. He’s starting to take advantage of that. With Marauder Travis Epp out of the line-up for most of the first half with an injured wrist, the Crusaders quickly built a 24-10 lead.

In the final, the Saskatoon Holy Cross Crusaders defeated the Saskatoon Walter Murray Marauders 63-50 as Matt McCullough scored 16, Jeff Thies 14, Lydell Fiddler 12 and Colin Gruending 7. Errol Lovelace paced the Marauders with 19. Doug Wegren added 10. Marauders coach Mike Harrington told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix that “we gave it a decent shot. I thought we played well enough defensively to hold ourselves in. But well, they have such a good group of athletes.” Crusaders guard Matt McCullough said it was “inevitable” that the Crusaders would shoot less effectively than they did in the semis (.690). “We just had to keep working. Just plug away. Mr. Hardy stressed from the beginning of the season that we’d have to win with character.” Harrington said “we wanted to force them to shoot over the top. It was our only chance. Maybe they would go 96% from out there but that’s better than letting them inside. Then it might be 80.” During a critical second-half stretch in which the Crusaders ripped off an 8-0 run, McCullough hit a jumper, Ian MacDonald hit a jumper, Colin Gruending drove the baseline for a layup and McCullough hit another bomb to make it 49-39. He soon added a layup and it was game over for the Marauders. Crusaders coach Dave Hardy said “when the game got close, he (McCullough) took control. He was like a whirling dervish for about four minutes. It wasn’t textbook but I’ve never seen anyone with a desire to win that strong.” Hardy told the Regina Leader-post that “I wasn’t comfortable until the final buzzer sounded. … It’s a real nice feeling.” McCullough said “we had to show Walter Murray that just because they were bigger than us, just because they were stuffing us, we weren’t going to back down.” Hardy said Thies, Fiddler and Grunding “were our unsung heroes. They scored when they had to and that was the difference.”
