Spartans coach Spence Burgess told the Regina Leader-Post that “I looked maybe a little disappointed after the game. But then a fan told me to savor it because we had won by two points. Two points or 50 points, what the difference? One’s easier but a win is a win.” The Spartans led 36-13 at the half. “Balfour got on a roll, hit 4 or 5 shots and we didn’t hit any,” Burgess said. “At that stage, with two minutes left, they had the crowd roaring and we were waiting for the clock to run out.” Balfour got a pair of buckets each from Sompat Houmphahn and Paul Sattler to rally within 67-66 with 27 seconds to play. The Spartans ran down the clock and Steve Manz hit a free throw to close out the scoring. Miller said “we have to keep people entertained. We were up by 19 and they’ve got a good press, quickness and utilized it to come back at us. We weren’t moving the ball around that well either.” Redmen coach Glen Fekula said “it’s a coaching principle that if you’re small you should pressure and run. It’s just at times, it wasn’t a very intelligent fastbreak … The intensity of the game was there and they got caught up in it. Hopefully, you can point that out and they can learn from it.” …………………………………………………… The O’Neill Titans clocked the Miller Marauders 99-40 as Kim Siefert scored 29 and Nick Frolick 21. The Titans led 50-48 with 11 minutes to play when coach Al Collins took a technical for arguing about a goaltend by Luther’s Richard Cohee. Cohee hit 2 free throws to knot the score. Titans guard Peter Lewis said “we were a little upset with the call. I tried to turn it around in our favour by getting us excited out there to play. That technical helped out because we really got together as a team and at that time, came back into the game.” Luther led 57-53 but Lewis hit an and-one to give O’Neill a 58-57 lead. Cohee then fouled out and the Titans took command. O’Neill coach Al Collins said “I thought we took some shots in the second half that we shouldn’t have. Luther changed their offence and were taking advantage of some things we weren’t doing on defence. It’s not that we flattened out, but Luther moved the ball better and we had to react to Cohee.” Richard Cohee led the Lions with 31. Paul Cohee added 14 and Shane Reoch 6. If it was something I could put my finger on, I would have changed it about eight games ago.” With the score at 71-60, Travis Epp hit a pair of putbacks. They just won’t quit.” The Marauders ripped off a 19-4 run down the stretch, led primarily by Hoffman bombs. Harrington said “once we hit a couple of those long ones, momentum kind of swung in our favour.” Pekush hit 6-8 from the floor in the second half and the winning bomb in the final minute. “I knew it was going in,” Pekush said. “I guess that’s going to sound real cocky. Kevin Hoffman led the Marauders with 18. Errol Lovelace added 24 and Travis Epp 15. We thought they couldn’t handle our pressure … So we got the intensity going and never let up no matter what.” The Spartans led 29-17 at the half.

In the other semi, the Saskatoon E.D. Feehan Trojans nipped the Regina Archbishop M.C. O’Neil Titans 54-53 as Andy Stepaniuk scored 17, Kevin Cherneski 16 and Kelly Cherneski 8. Peter Lewis led the Titans with 14, Kim Siefert 14 and Stewart Baer 11. Kelly Cherneski told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix that “our shooting had been pretty bad from the foul line. Guess I showed them how it’s done, huh?” Andy Stepaniuk, a 6-5 post, had three putbacks down the stretch.” Trojans coach Brian Carduner said “that’s a talent. It’s kind of hard to teach what he did.” Kelly Cherneski, on nabbing two boards in the final minute, noted “how about that? Two rebounds. Matches my career total. I think. … I was lucky. Just turn and throw.” Titans coach Al Collins told the Regina Leader-Post that ‘we didn’t shoot the ball as well as we have. We just didn’t pull the ball in.” The score was knotted at 53 when Feehan’s Kelly Cherniski missed a trey but got his own rebound and was fouled driving to the hoop with one second to play. He hit 1-2 from the line to win it. Cherniski told the Regina Leader-Post that “I was fairly confident. … I aimed right and made it. I’m still on cloud-nine. Mike Stepaniuk said the zone “hasn’t failed yet.” The Trojans broke open a 40-40 game with a 26-8 run ignited by three Andy Stepaniuk buckets. Carduner told the Regina Leader-Post that “Andy, in a big way, broke the game open for us. We went inside and he was there when we needed him. … We didn’t want to turn the ball over on the press.
