In the third quarter Hudson Bay played transition well, balancing their attack, achieving a 60-41 edge. Preeceville started the fourth quarter with 2 quick points, and later with a 3 pointer. led Hudson Bay with 21. Tysen Russel added 12. Hudson Bay scored the first 2
points in the game, but that was the only lead they would see for the day. Davidson
showed their skill and athleticism defending a 26-16 lead after the first
quarter. Hudson Bay had many chances to keep the game within reach, as many of
their shots rattled in the hoop, but couldn’t find their way down. Davidson
remained strong on their offensive boards. Hudson Bay turned the ball over on
some costly giveaways, and Davidson seemed to be in control with a lead of
46-25 at halftime. In the third quarter, Davidson continued to control the
ball, and with the help of some fast break offense, they were well in command with
a score of 72-44. Hudson Bay continued to press hard, but Davidson proved to be
too much.
The 2nd-seeded Saskatoon Christian Centre Academy Cougars whipped the Kinistino Blues 99-42.
In the last
quarterfinal, the Moose Jaw Cornerstone Falcons defeated the Wolseley Warriors 72-56
as Sheldon Oakes scored 43. Stephan Boehme and Cole Smith each scored 10 to
paced Wolseley. The score at half had Cornerstone leading 37-25, but Wolseley
wasn’t ready to give up yet. Coming out aggressively after half-time, the Warriors
came within 4 points, but couldn’t quite finish under the net to take the lead.
In the semis, the 2nd-seeded Saskatoon
Christian Centre Academy Cougars defeated the Moose Jaw Cornerstone Falcons
85-73 as Mike Donauer scored 28, Spencer Janzen 27 and Seth Davis 10. Sheldon
Oakes led the Falcons with 20. Kevin Bergen added 15. The CCA Eagles took
flight in the second half against the Falcons to break a 36-36 deadlock at half
time. It’s the first time in four years I’ve gotten to the final,” said CCA
point guard Spencer Janzen. “I’ve had three really bad years before this. We’re
really excited. We weren’t really sticking to our game plan at the beginning,
but then our coach in the change room told us to just stick with what we did
all year.”
In the other semi, the 5th-seeded Davidson Raiders edged the top-seeded Regina Christian Grizzlies 77-73 as Kody Reich scored 22 and Luke Edwards 20. John Yoo paced Regina Christian with 16. Travis McLaren added 12. “We came out ready — we were up 24-11, or whatever it was, after the first quarter and then foul trouble gave us a bit of a crunch there in the second quarter, so it gave them some momentum going into the half,” Grizzlies coach Geoff Glasspell told the Regina Leader-Post. “In the second half, they just kept riding the momentum that they had. I guess today wasn’t our day.” Regina Christian opened a big lead that slowly disappeared. The Grizzlies got into foul trouble as the Raiders, especially post player Luke Edwards, took the ball to the hoop and drew numerous fouls. “It feels great,” Edwards said of knocking off the top seed. “It’s my first time here (at Hoopla) and the atmosphere is awesome. We had a slow start, but we had the fans on our side and we came back.” Edwards ended the game with a spectacular block underneath the basket. “We came out ready — we were up 24-11 or whatever after the first quarter and then foul trouble gave us a bit of a crunch,” said Grizzlies coach Geoff Glasspell. “In the second half they just kept riding the momentum. I guess today wasn’t our day.”
In the bronze medal match, the top-seeded Regina Christian Grizzlies stomped the Moose Jaw Cornerstone Falcons 92-68 as Tyrel McLaren scored 30. Sheldon Oakes led the Falcons with 18. Ben Koot added 12. The Grizzlies led 38-27 at the half. The Falcons (coached by Mark Albert) also included Jesse Dombowky, Kyle Klippenstein, Duncan Oakes, David Dombowsky, Kevin Bergen, Jayson Peters, Leif Fryklund, Matt Brennan, Stephen Beitel and Rom Jukes.
In the final, the 2nd-seeded Saskatoon Christian Centre Academy Cougars whipped Davidson 104-56. The Eagles won it home before a raucous crowd. “We practiced a bit with a stereo system in practice, but it wasn’t anything like this,” CCA forward Mike Donauer said with a grin. “We’d (play it) during practices and shooting drills — it was definitely really annoying, but I’m not sure if it helped.” The crowd was demonstrably pro-CCA and the team — which placed fourth at last year’s Hoopla — rode the high-decibel momentum to a 57-28 halftime lead. The championship is a first for Donauer, a Grade 12 student who played hoops with teammate Spencer Janzen since both were five. “God gave me all the strength I need,” said Donauer, who has a brother and three cousins — all with the same last name — on the 10-man squad. “It’s been huge to have a bunch of guys willing to lay it on the line for their teammates and not worry about their personal image.” Stephen Tymchak netted a game-high 28 points for CCA and Donauer added 27. Kody Reich scored 18 for Davidson. Luke Edwards added 12.
