Axemen coach Faro Halupa told the Guardian that “you could tell both teams were a little nervous and we slowly worked our way into the game. It was a defensive battle, which was not surprising. … Big games like that comes down to defence, loose balls and things like that. That’s kind of what happened out there.” The Axemen opened the game with an 11-2 run. “It was great to make the first couple of shots,” said Halupa. “It gives you a lot of confidence right away. Then we just coasted along and every push they made, we made a little push back. That’s basketball – just keep moving on and see where it is at the end.” Halupa added that playoff MVP Zach Connell made “big, big, big plays (in the final) and in our semifinal, too, I think he had 18 points, 16 rebounds, eight assists to get us here and it was a close game in the semi, too. He was big (against Gray) with timely buckets, big free throws coming down and stretch and huge rebounding.” Halupa added that resilience and a competitive spirit proved the difference. “(In the final), we showed it, that toughness and grind we’ve been fighting for all year. It showed up in the biggest moments when we needed it for sure.”
