In the final, the 2nd-seeded Summerside Three Oaks Axemen defeated the Charlottetown Rural Raiders 84-77. The perimeter shooting of Brett Montgomery, getting an early lead, tough rebounding by Mark Matheson and excellent playmaking by point guard Dexter Couglin proved the difference, Axemen coach Faro Halupa told the Summerside Journal-Pioneer. “Brett Montgomery made a lot of outside shots early, and I think that was the difference getting out ahead, taking the energy away from their crowd cause we’re in their gym.” Rural coach Mike Lloyd said his troops were undone by coming out poorly in the first half, shooting too early in the shot clock and trying to dribble through three or four guys. “We battled back in the second half, but we couldn’t quite close it out. … We just dug ourselves such a deep hole in the first half we didn’t have a ladder tall enough to climb our way out,” he added. Three Oaks led 40-28 at half, 67-51 after three quarters and built a 17-point lead before the Raiders made it interesting and got to within three with 40 seconds left. After a turnover and a Montgomery foul shot, Rural again had the ball under the Three Oaks hoop down four points with 10.5 seconds to go but could not get a shot away. MacKay hit a free throw to seal the victory. Brett Montgomery paced the Axemen with 26. Tournament MVP Mark Matheson added 19 points and 18 boards. Dexter Coughlin scored 17, Alec Parise 11 and Brian MacKay 11. Jacob Simmons led the Raiders with 28 points and 12 boards. Kyle Welton scored 15, along with 6 boards, Kyle Gillis 10 and Andrew Clark 10. Halupa was elated. “We were in the same position last year. We were there, but we just couldn’t pull it off.”
