In the other semi, the Stoney Creek St. John Henry Newman Cardinals stunned the Sarnia St. Patrick’s Catholic Fighting Irish 46-42. The Cardinals led 15-11 after one quarter. The Fighting Irish led 31-20 at the half and 38-33 after three quarters. “We played really well that game,” Fighting Irish coach Dave Elsley told the Sarnia Observor. “We just went cold at the worst possible moment. We just couldn’t score in the second half. That’s a testament to them, too. Their defence was very good. I thought our girls battled really hard. They never quit.”
In the bronze medal match, the Pickering Trojans edged the Sarnia St. Patrick’s Catholic Fighting Irish 55-53. The Fighting Irish led 18-16 after one quarter and 35-31 at the half. The score was knotted at 42 after three quarters. The Fighting Irish took a 47-44 lead in the final frame on a trey by Taryn Stoukas but the Trojans took command with a 7-0 run. Keira Aikman paced the Fighting Irish with 17. Fighting Irish coach Dave Elsley told the Sarnia Observer that when “you come away fourth in the province and you can’t be disappointed with that. … Pickering is an excellent team. It’s a tough matchup for us. We hung in there and played as hard as we could and just came up two points short.” The Fighting Irish (coach David Elsley, assistant Vince Flamia, assistant Melanie DeSena) included Maliyah Ogorek, Ioanna Tsaprailis, Jamison Turner, Taryn Stoukas, Ella Bowen, Kaitlyn Carlton, Alexandra Richard, Hayley VanHooft, Katie Coenjarts and Keira Aikman.
In the final, the Hamilton Cathedral Gaels dusted the Stoney Creek St. John Henry Newman Cardinals 81-43 after leading 32-16, 47-21 and 72-29 at the quarters. It marked the third consecutive provincial title for the Gaels. “Honestly, I didn’t think we’d get three in a row,” Rachel Daly told the Hamilton Spectator. Gaels coach Kevin Daly, in the rare position of coaching a team that included his two daughters (Keira and Nicole) and two nieces (Rachel and Lauren) said his troops benefitted from fast starts throughout the tournament. “We had super starts every game.” The title bout was rematch of the Hamilton city final and the regional Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference final, both of which Cathedral won. Maya Flynn, who blew out a knee early in the season but remained with the Gaels as an assistant, called Hamilton’s dominance at OFSAA (10 of the past 12 AAA titles and 13 of the past 16, when including wins in the defunct 4A category) “unbelievable.”
