The Gaels led 50-45 at the half and 74-54 after three quarters after taking command with a 16-2 run. “We got out to big leads most of our games, the final was the only one we ever trailed in,” Gaels’ coach Kevin Daly told the Hamilton Spectator. “They hit 10 of their first 12 three-point shots, which is just incredible. I don’t think we played bad defence, they were just on fire. They played great and we had to play great to beat them. Our main game is we press, we trap and we get steals. We got a bunch of steals and got back in the lead. It was a great final. The score at the half was 50-45, which is unheard of. I’ve never been involved in a game like that. We score a lot but we had to really score in this game.” Keira Daly paced the Gaels with 35. Kylie Rosos added 15, Maya Flynn 14, Nicole Daly 13 and Amy Varrasso 8. “Cathedral is obviously known for boys sports,” Daly said. “There are pictures on the wall of the boys teams, and our goal before the start of the last year was to win the city and get the 2021 team up there, and be the first girls’ team on the wall. Now we’ll have two pictures on the wall. Hopefully we’re leading the way, and more girls teams will be winning at Cathedral. … You go to OFSAA and everyone knows there’s no doubt that Hamilton is the hub of girls basketball: high school, rep teams, everything. It’s nice to add Cathedral to that list of great Hamilton teams.” Kiki Sran led the Knights with 24. Leah Tate added 23 and Lily Collins 13. “As long as you keep fighting to the end, there’s no reason that you should give up,” Tate told the Windsor Star. “Never give up and keep working until the end. … It is a little frustrating,” the 18-year-old Tate said. “We had a really good start and then it kind of fell short in the second quarter.” Knight Kiki Sran added that “was a great press. We couldn’t get the ball over, so give credit to them, but I feel we fought hard until all the way to the end and I couldn’t be prouder. … “ just think we had a lot of momentum and then we kind of got flustered a bit with their press, but we came back. I feel like we fought hard until the end and there’s nothing more I could have asked. … If you think about it, there’s 100 teams in high school and we finished top two, second-best team in Ontario, so even though we lost the championship it’s still a really big honour and a big accomplishment and I’m proud of my team.” Knights coach Sean Culhane said “of our starting five, three are soccer-first girls. They probably all will play soccer at the next level as their university sport. Their effort and their willingness to be coached in a sport that’s not really their No. 1 sport has been phenomenal. Our first, basically, OFSAA medal in the history of the school for senior girls.”
