“We got better as the year went on,” Warriors coach Frank Marof told the Hamilton Spectator. “We lost the city final to Dundas Valley — a really good team — and that hurt a bit, but the girls took it to heart. They’re a great bunch of girls. They never give up, and they were like that all year. We battled back, and our defence was great as usual. Cardinal Newman is a terrific team and we struggled a bit with their fast break.” The Warriors finished (34-6) on the season. Marof said Hamilton’s continued dominance of the Ontario high school girl’s scene is a function of the city having so many girls “who want to play the game. And we all play tough defence; then we go on to offence. It’s a winning formula.” Cardinals coach Roy Milutinovic told the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic School Board website that “these are two solid teams. They’re ranked No. 1 and No. 2, so nobody is going to win by 20 points. We knew it would be a tight game.” Westdale led 48-46 when the Cardinals inbounded the ball with 14 seconds to play. Cardinal point guard Katumina Mansaray heaved a runner which bounced around the rim. Westdale’s Jordan Denkers was fouled on the rebound and hit 1-2 free throws with 7.5 seconds to play to close out the scoring. “I told them (in the post-game dressing room) sometimes they go in and sometimes they don’t,” Milutinovic said. “Then, with a tie game, the pressure would have been on them.” Mansaray said “we prepared, we worked hard and we gave everything we could on the court. It was an extremely close game throughout. It came down to the little things. Sometimes, you’re just unlucky.” Newman had taken a 41-4o lead on a Mansaray trey with 3:45 to play. The Cardinals finished (33-3) on the campaign. Milutinovic said “it’s two years with back-to-back city championships and silver medals at OFSAA. That’s a fantastic accomplishment for Cardinal Newman. I’m proud of them. I was happy to be part of it.”
