Ally Gonzalez-Angulo and Jenalyn Yumol added 10 each. Carlie Nugent had eight for the Colts. “That was so exciting,” Wolynski said. “We came out strong. We played like we can.         In the last quarterfinal, the 5th-seeded London Regina Mundi Catholic Titans defeated the 4th-seeded Kingston Holy Cross Crusaders 43-31 after leading 11-6, 19-16 and 29-28 at the quarters. The Titans took an 11-point lead in the first half, but a flurry of threes in the second quarter put the Crusaders up two a minute before halftime. But three free throws gave the Titans a one-point lead at the break they never relinquished as the Crusaders got deeper into foul trouble as the second half went on. “Oh yeah, that was pretty intense,” said Titans guard Caroline Wolynski, who scored 25. “But we played as a team, played like we can and it showed. It got pretty scary at one point (as the Crusaders rallied), but we pulled it together. We just wanted to prove to everyone we’re not just the host team, we’re here because we deserve to be.” Mundi coach Rick Sheardown said “they’re the cardiac kids. They did what they had to when they had to do it. Holy Cross had a great defence and we were denied the inside a lot, so we had to keep it around the perimeter and pick our spots. Because they’re young, nobody expects them to be here. That’s one of the speeches we’re always giving — ‘You’re all in Grade 11, you average 5-foot-3. Nobody thinks you can do it.’ But almost every game we’re outsized, so physical play is something this team is quite used to.” The Crusaders (coached by Kelly Dixon, assisted by Alfie De Melo) included Brooklin Murphy, Riley Shkimba, Stephanie Benton, Kathleen Chapman, Brittany Fitzgerald, Haley Gourdier, Jamey Hawley, Kelsey Kirbyson, Sarah Besselink, Madison Norman, Jordyn Perrin and Karine Spinozzi.

In the bronze medal match, the 5th-seeded London Regina Mundi Catholic Titans dumped the 9th-seeded Kitchener Waterloo C.V.S. Kate MacTavish paced the Raiders with 15. Claire Lockhart added 10. The Titans overcame an early deficit to lead 35-25 at the half, then outscored the Raiders 10-2 in the third quarter to take control. “We just all supported each other and lifted ourselves up and reconnected,” Yumol said. “We had to get the flow back, but we knew we had the heart and the desire to go right to the end. The key for us was teamwork and having confidence and getting all the support from the bench, the fans and of course the coaches.” Coach Rick Sheardown said “I told the girls, ‘You’ve given me a great present in getting this far, so if you really want to make this worthwhile, win this one. It wasn’t until about six minutes that I could see their confidence start to come back, their game start to come back. But before this tournament, we came in with no expectations. They knew they were going to be facing some pretty good opposition, so being here and winning a medal never entered their minds as a reality. But we came out in our second game against Peterborough St. Peter’s and dominated from the start. That’s when I turned to Tracey (assistant coach Swift) and said, ‘You know, we might still be playing Saturday’,” The Raiders (coached by Nicholas White, assisted by Erika Werner) also included Kate Holbrook-Smith, Megan Longpre, Rachael Urosevic, Andrea Bowra, Jessica Duke, Susan Gordon, Skye Johns, Carly McCrory, Lana Pfaff, Barbara Robertson, Deanna Walker, Olivia Nelles and Katelyn Pentsa.

In the final, the 2nd-seeded Gloucester Ecole Secondaire Louis-Riel Rebelles nipped the top-seeded Amherstburg General Amherst Generals 51-49 after leading 20-9, 29-26 and 38-35 at the quarters. Amherst trailed 20-9 after one quarter and fell behind by as much as 14 in the second quarter but clawed their way back and actually led the Ottawa-based school with four minutes to go. Amherst head coach Dom Silvaggio told the Windsor Star that the first quarter proved the squad’s undoing. “We missed open shots. We weren’t very successful from the free-throw line.” By contrast, Riel banked in two three-pointers in the first quarter. “It just seemed to be their night,” said Silvaggio. “They are a very talented team.” Amherst made it a three-point game at the half. “It’s a credit to our kids. To (come back) against a talented team shows their spunk and spirit our kids have.” Louis Riel hit a three-pointer to go up 47-44 with roughly 90 seconds to go forcing Amherst to foul to stay in the game. “They had a shot to win it and tie it. It wasn’t in the cards,” said Silvaggio.
