Katie Vrancart led the Rams with 15. …………………………………………………… The 2nd-seeded Toronto Don Bosco Eagles defeated the Windsor Vincent Massey Mustangs 35-14. Windsor sought to slow the game to absolute crawl in hopes they could lull the Eagles to sleep. They apparently lulled the refs to sleep, who nailed the Mustangs with a pair of delay of game technical fouls. “That first call really threw us,” Massey center Marion Diakowsky, who scored 10, told the Windsor Star. “It was pretty questionable. We were feeling comfortable with what we were doing to that point. We knew we couldn’t run with them, so we had to wait. It was working too. We had a couple of nice players over the top for easy baskets and we were only down 10-9 with the ball late in the half. Had we got to the half with a one-point lead or down only one, it wouldn’t be a different ball game.” Instead, Bosco’s Angela Pin nailed four free throws on the technicals and the Eagles moved ahead 16-9 at the break. Mustangs coach Richard Basinski said “I have to take responsibility for that last minute or so. The girls were so angry with the first technical foul that it rattled them. I should’ve made sure we didn’t commit another one. Being down seven at the half forced us out of our game plan.” Totally rattled, Massey scored only a free throw by Diakowsky in the third quarter, after which they trailed 25-10. Ayodele Bygrave led the Eagles with 12. Tina Ryan added 11. Marian Diakowsky led the Mustangs with 8. The Mustangs also included Janet Basinski, Shelley Holden. …………………………………………………… The 5th-seeded Sarnia Collegiate Blue Bombers edged the Mississauga St. Martin’s Mustangs 45-41 as Marnie Buchanan scored 18. Izabella Bachmanek paced the Mustangs with 18.

In the second round: …………………………………………………… The 8th-seeded Oshawa Paul Dwyer Saints defeated the Windsor Vincent Massey Mustangs 54-49 as Marcy Skribe scored 22. Marion Diakowsky paced the Mustangs with 23. Dana McCullough scored 11 before getting into foul trouble, forcing the Mustangs to look to Elena Fields and Tanya Natyshak off the bench. A late 9-2 run gave Dwyer a 32-23 lead at the half. “We didn’t play that well defensively in the second quarter,” coach Richard Basinski told the Windsor Star. “We didn’t contain Marcy Skribe well. We let her shoot from the outside and we let her drive and pass off too much in the first half. That was a big edge for them. Every time we got close to them, they would go on one of their little spurts and we’d be 10 down again.” Skribe finished with 22 points, including 16 in the first half. Nadia Gosgnach added 8. The Mustangs closed the margin to 40-36 after three quarters but Dwyer opened the final frame with a 6-0 run and iced it at the line. The Mustangs included Marion Diakowsky, Dana McCullough. ………………………………………………… The top-seeded Hamilton St. Mary’s Crusaders crushed the Ottawa St. Pius X X-Women 61-28 as Tina Ellison scored 30. The gym was so cold that players on the bench wore coats and gloves. The Blue Bombers (coached by McLellan) also included Kelly Ferguson, Tara Forbes, Amy McLellan, Krista Duncan, Becky Horner, Marcy Hutchinson, Stacey Adams, Shelley Vanderbeld, Natalie Russell, Sheila Popen and Marcy Mazgaj.

In the semis, the 3rd-seeded Brantford St. John’s Eagles dumped the 2nd-seeded Toronto Don Bosco Eagles 42-36 as Susan Kruis scored 15, Janet Reid 10, Jennifer Gallant 8, Sharon Kruis 5 and Jennifer Reid 4. The Green Eagles led 9-8 after one quarter. Don Bosco led 23-19 at the half and 33-27 after three quarters.        In the other semi, the top-seeded Hamilton St. Mary’s Crusaders nipped the 4th-seeded Sudbury Lasalle Lancers 50-48 as Tina Ellison scored 23. Jolene Morrison led the Lancers with 17.

In the bronze medal match, the 4th-seeded Sudbury LaSalle Lancers defeated the Toronto Don Bosco Eagles 47-35 as Wendy Nutt scored 23. Ayodele Bygrave led the Eagles with 12. “It was one of those days where we couldn’t run anything right, just went from bad to worse,” said Don Bosco coach Cathy Casey told the Toronto Star. The Eagles included Tina Blaskovic, Daisy Bygrove, Angela Pin, Tina Ryan.

In the final, the 3rd-seeded Brantford St. John’s Green Eagles defeated the top-seeded Hamilton St. Mary’s Crusaders 64-56 as Jennifer Gallant scored 21, Janet Reid 12, Susan Kruis 9, Jennifer Reid 9, Sharon Kruis 7 and Carol Rodrigues 6. Gallant told the Brantford Expositor that “we really want to win for the Kruises because they’re the only ones who won’t be back. … We beat them (St. Mary’s) once but that was early in the season. We lost to them a few times after that so we were a little shaky (heading into the final) but we knew we could beat them. We just played better than we had all year. … We were a little more disciplined at the end and we learned to play more like a team. He (coach Delaney) made us work as a team.” Delaney, who was simultaneously coaching Western’s university Mustangs, said “we have some kids who really understand what I’m trying to do with them and they really executed to a T. This was just an indication of what they could do. We also worked on their will to win and when we got here they kept telling Mary (Fogale, the assistant coach) and I that they were going to win. The confidence they had in themselves was a big key. Mary and I, we tried to take the edge of them by saying what they had accomplished so far was great and anything more was a bonus.” The Green Eagles led 22-15 after one quarter on three treys by Gallant. They led 33-23 at the half by effectively handling the Crusaders press. St. Mary’s twice cut the lead to three in the third quarter but each time, Gallant answered with a trey. The Green Eagles led 51-46 after three quarters. Delaney said “it came down to our discipline and their discipline. I thought we made them play out of sync. Ellison scored 14 points which isn’t very many for her. By taking away their inside game, we caused their perimeter game to speed up a little bit. I don’t think they had very good shot selection.” Tina Ellison led the Crusaders with 14. Rena Wesolowski added 12, Lori Ryan 11, Angela Nobes 10 and Tanya Tatti 9. Nobes told the Hamilton Spectator “our ability put us through the other games. I guess we need a little more experience.” Crusaders coach Karen Cutaia said “it was just a general lack of discipline. They were basically out of control. I think they let the refereeing get to them and you can’t do that in a championship game.”
