In the final, the top-seeded Barrie Innisdale Invaders defeated the St. Catharines CI Saints 55-51 as Patti Johnston scored 18, grabbed 16 boards and controlled the tempo. She scored 11 points in the opening quarter, hauled down a dozen rebounds before the game was three minutes old and then started slowing the game to a crawl. “Settle down, take control of the play and keep the ball, something they (St. Catharines) need to win with,” she said the Toronto Star, admitting it led to double and triple coverage which allowed her teammates the freedom to add to the scoreboard. That’s exactly what happened for Pam Leitch, Sheila Manning and Erica Sibbutu, each of whom had a field day sinking shots from 20 feet out. “We had to try to control Johnston, but that outside and baseline shooting is what did us in. They shot the lights out,” said Saints coach Walt Szplewski, whose team lost to the same Innisdale squad by five points in last year’s provincial bronze medal game. Innisdale led 15-8, and 17-12 after the opening quarter but St. Catharines, with a strong scoring performance by Jay Cushing, rallied to within 27-23 (also reported as 27-24) at the half after going to a box-and-one to contain Johnson. But Innisdale regained a healthy 11-point margin (44-33) with eight minutes left to play. In the second half, Cushing again began attacking the penetration dribble as St. Catharines made another charge to draw within three with 20 seconds to play but their rally fell just short. Cushing led the Invaders with 24. Tammy Naughton added 13 and Audrey Winter 10. Pam Leitch added 14 for the Saints, while Sheila Manning scored 8 and Erica Sibbutu 8. Saints coach Walt Szipelewski told the St. Catharines Standard that “I think our girls were just outstanding. They had to really battle against London Lucas (in the semis) and then came back and played a very good team, going all out for 32 minutes. They never lost their composure. … Their outside shooting was phenomenal. We had to the better of the game in the first quarter and still ended down by five. I’ve never seen a team shoot that well for the duration of a game. We were prepared for the first three shooters but not for their fourth and fifth players. Everybody shot the lights out for them.”
