In the opening round, held in Toronto: …………………………………………………… The top seeded Sudbury Secondary North Stars defeated the Toronto George Harvey Hawks 69-35 as 6-1 forward Carol Hamilton took command in the second half. “The score line looks terrible but I was sort of pleased with the way our girls played,” said George Harvey coach Mike Katz. “This is the first time they’ve seen this caliber of basketball and the fact that they played within 15 points of them for so much of the game will give them confidence.” …………………………………………………… The Peel J.A. Turner Trojans crushed the Toronto York Mills Titans 60-50. …………………………………………………… The 2nd-seeded Windsor Vincent Massey Mustangs dumped the Ottawa Brookfield Blues 68-48 after leading 40-26 at the half. Misty Thomas paced the Mustangs with 24. Tricia Hylland added 23, Nancy Hylland 16, Albu 3 and Moore 2. Tricia Hylland told the Windsor Start that “we just kept going through the back door on them. We thought they’d adjust to it after a while but they never did. Misty must have thrown me eight passes in a row to the same place but they kept guarding me the same way and Mr. Curtin was yelling ‘back door, back door’.” Blues coach Craig Milne said “I don’t if that was the best team we’ve faced all year but those are certainly the two best players we’ve seen. Sometimes it looked as if the other three girls were just out there to balance the floor off. But you can’t try to stop them. You’ve just gotta play your own game and hope for the best.” Vandeboncoeur paced the Blues with 18. Carter added 10, Majid 10, Maldrum 4, Weeks 4 and Benoit 2. …………………………………………………… The Hamilton Bishop Ryan Celtics dumped the Fort William Blue Bears 62-52 as Sharon Knowles scored 22. Celtics coach Joe Di Trapani told the Hamilton Spectator that his troops were hurt when Carolyn Oliver picked up her fourth foul with a minute to play in the third quarter. “I just can’t get her to stop. She tries too hard and tries to do everything herself. She doesn’t realize that there are four other players on the floor.” It forced the Celtics into a four-minute stall. Di Trapani said with Oliver “on the floor, we’re a totally different team. She makes things happen. When she got off the floor, we had to slow it down.” Lynne Brown led the Bears with 22. Cathy Simpson added 12. …………………………………………………… The Welland Notre Dame Fighting Irish defeated the Toronto Oakwood Barons 51-34. …………………………………………………… The 4th-seeded Sarnia St. Patrick’s Fighting Irish trounced the Cornwall General Vanier Vikings 69-49. …………………………………………………… The Toronto Dante Alligheiri Monarchs nipped the Scarborough Agincourt Lancers 49-47. …………………………………………………… The 3rd-seeded Hamilton Bishop Ryan Celtics dumped the Toronto Oakwood Barons 51-36. …………………………………………………… The Midland Marauders defeated the Peterborough Thomas A. The Hamilton Bishop Ryan Celtics defeated the Welland Notre Dame Fighting Irish 73-55 as Sharon Knowles scored 30 on 14-19 from the line, Carolyn Oliver 13, Lucy Grossman 13 and Sandra Troccoli 8. Celtics coach Joe Di Trapani told the Hamilton Spectator that “Sandra played really well and it’s the best I’ve seen her play. Sheila McAvoy led the Fighting Irish with 24. Louise MacDonald added 13. The Fighting Irish (coach Karen Reinhardt) also included Fran MacDonald.
The top-seeded Sudbury Secondary North Stars pounded the Midland Marauders 63-36.
In the last quarterfinal, the Sarnia St. Patrick’s Fighting Irish defeated the Brantford St. John’s Green Eagles 60-40. The Green Eagles (coach Ralph Esbaugh) included Linda Cunningham, Joan Cunningham, Caroline De Sonder, Mary Leyzer, Eileen Kocsis, Michelle Rizzo, Rosanne Hoo.
In the semis, the top-seeded Sudbury Secondary North Stars defeated the 4th-seeded Hamilton Bishop Ryan Celtics 83-59 (also reported as 84-59). With Sudbury leading 59-50 in the fourth quarter, North Star Mary Kowal was allowed to re-shoot a free throw because the referee said crowd noise had distracted her. Celtic coach Joe Di Trapani called a timeout and asked for an explanation and was promptly hit with a technical. Di Trapani told the Hamilton Spectator that “I asked her (the official) where in the rule book I have to control the crowd and so she gave me a technical because I didn’t sit down. I didn’t yell at her or say anything obscene. That was the cheapest technical I had ever received.” Di Trapani said the call turned the game around. Mary Ann Kowal hit a free throw for the North Stars. Carol Hamilton added two free throws on the technical and Sudbury closed it out with a 25-9 run. Celtic Sharon Knowles said “that’s what everybody was getting upst about. When you boxed them out, the girls would crawl over your back and they (the refs) wouldn’t call it.” Sudbury led 40-25 at the half and 55-48 after three quarters. North Stars coach Mitch Lalonde said “I told my kids that 15 points is nothing. If we don’t get control of the third quarter and get 20 or 21 points on them, it’s going to be a tough game and that’s what happened.” Lalonde added that the game plan was to contain Carolyn Oliver and “let everyone else do what they wanted.” Carol Hamilton paced the North Stars with 28. Mary Ann Kowal added 21 and Casey Stargatt 15. Sharon Knowles led the Celtics with 21. Lucy Grossman added 12, Joanne Howatt 12 and Carolyn Oliver 3.

Sue Forsyth scored 23 to lead the Fighting Irish. Ellen Stenkamp added 16, Sandrin 6, Volsy 2 and Weston 2. Misty Thomas told the Windsor Star that “offensively, our team is very good. We knew we could score the points but we had to keep them from scoring. We’ve been practicing a new zone (a 2-1-2) the last couple of weeks and that seemed to work well.”
In the final, the top-seeded Sudbury Secondary North Stars clipped the 2nd-seeded Windsor Vincent Massey Mustangs 91-67. The North Stars finished the season (34-0) and captured their second consecutive provincial crown. Tricia Hylland, who went on to play at Michigan State, added 24, Sheila Albu 8, Cathy Moore 4, Janelle Cruickshank 2, Lori Nicholas 2 and Nancy Hylland 2. Mustangs coach Wayne Curtin told the Windsor Star that “we ran into a very strong team. The bottom line is that their overall strength was better than ours. You just have to look at their roster. They’ve got a national junior play (Carol Hamilton), a provincial player (Mary Ann Kowal) and a couple of regional players. We have a national junior and a regional player. But I’m very proud of our team, first of all, of Misty and Tricia who would’ve both been unanimous choices, if there was an all-star team. And Nancy Hylland, for a grade 10 girl, played very well. The other girls too, were super.”
