They had us on the run for a while but we showed some courage when we went back to the basics in the fourth quarter and shut them down pretty good. I thought our kids were a little uptight and were reaching too much. Basketball is a game you can play with the feet. When Kathy Butterfield fouled out and both Misty Thomas and Tricia Hylland accumulated four fouls apiece, it was time settle down the tempo of the game and go to a four-corner stall.” Curtin told the Kingston Whig-Standard that “we were fouling all over the place. But we went to a four corners and that takes time off the clock and allows our best players to stay on the floor a lot longer. … I don’t think they’re paying me enough for this. We played very poorly and got into foul trouble because our defence was playing more with our hands than with its feet. We were out of position and reaching more than we should have been. We showed that even when we did play badly, we could still win. We went back to the basics and that’s what you have to do when you’re not playing well. You go back to what you know to do best.”

The Mustangs drew no closer than 56-50. Misty Thomas told the Windsor Star that “we know that we can play better than this. We didn’t play our game today and the turnovers hurt us throughout.” Mustangs coach Wayne Curtin added that “they’re a good team. They made us make all those mistakes. Give them credit for that. But this has been a super season for us, the best season we’ve ever had. And this was our first taste of fall basketball. … They’re exceptional foul shooters. Maybe if we had gone into a half-court press earlier, it might have been a different outcome.”

In the final, the Sudbury North Stars defeated the Sarnia St. Patrick’s Fighting Irish 71-54 as guard Casey Nichols broke open a tight affair with three quick buckets in the final quarter. Until her six-point splurge, the lead had changed hands repeatedly, with neither squad leading by more than five. Sudbury had led 51-50 when Nichols broke loose. “Nichol’s shot was tight all game but then she hit three in a row and Mary Eccleston hit a fourth basket. It was the turning point in the game,” said coach Mitch Lalonde. Lalonde told the Kingston Whig-Standard that “they had us tied up pretty good. We couldn’t do anything inside against them. We usually run a lot but things were different in the first three quarters of this game. After the pass was made, we were just standing around  watching what was going on instead of moving around. But in the fourth quarter (which Sudbury dominated by a 2-18 count) we started moving and penetrating and started to hit with our shots. … They were trying to key Carol (Hamilton) on the inside and that let Mary Ann (Kowal) get inside and from a five-foot radius, she just doesn’t miss.” St. Patrick’s coach Bob Delaney said his troops “got a little tired, a little lazy on defence. It took a lot out of us playing the type of defence we’re playing.” Sarnia had played a 2-3 zone until Sudbury broke loose, at which point they changed to a man-to-man defence. Mary Ann Kowal paced Sudbury with 34, hitting 12-13 from the line (alternately reported as 14-14. “We tried to deny Carol Hamilton the ball but then Kowal just took over,” said Delaney. Hamilton added 24 for the North Stars, Casey Nichols 6, Ecclestone 4, Vairo 2 and Lanovaz 2, while Lamore was scoreless. Ursula Griemens led the Fighting Irish with 15.
