In the opening seeding round: …………………………………………………… The top-seeded Whitby Anderson Raiders clocked the 11th-seeded Mississauga Ascension of Our Lord Eagles 92-66 after leading 26-16, 48-35 and 68-46 at the quarters. Dyshawn Pierre paced the Raiders with 33. Justin Edwards added 32. Sheldon Allen led the Eagles (coached by Frank Muia, assisted by Terry Kalino) with 20. Jullian Owusu and Bikram Gill each added 12. …………………………………………………… The 6th-seeded Windsor W.F. Herman Green Griffins whipped the 1th-seeded Sault Ste. Marie St. Mary’s Knights 67-37 after leading 21-15, 38-23 and 59-30 at the quarters. Antoine Chandler led the Griffins with 17. Matt Barker added 14. Aidan Chard paced the Knights. Devin Nicolson and Alexander Morrison each added 6. Saints replacement coach Loris Pecile (sitting in for Adriano Carota, who was unavailable) told the Sault Star that “we had two bad quarters of breaking pressure and they were a very quick team, a relentless team, a very deep team, a very good shooting team.” …………………………………………………… The 9th-seeded London Sir Frederick Banting Broncos stunned the 3rd-seeded Etobicoke Martingrove Bears 62-55. Martingrove led 24-14 after one quarter and 37-32 at the half. Banting led 44-43 after three quarters. Gregory Morrow paced the Broncos (coached by Umar Chaudhry, assisted by Graham Buchanan) with 18. Tanner Poor added 12. Steffon Watson led the Bears (coached by Shawn Gray, assisted by Chris Sommerfelt) with 17. Sukhpreet Singh added 13. …………………………………………………… The 8th-seeded Toronto Jarvis Bulldogs stuffed the 14th-seeded Niagara Falls St. Paul Catholic Patriots 64-42 after leading 13-7, 41-20 and 55-29 at the quarters. Denzel Lynch-Blair paced the Bulldogs (coached by Mohit Dayaram, assisted by Monica Rossos, Akeem Segree, Jermaine Johnson and King Aguelefo) with 21. Jeff Antwi added 13. Joseph Leo led the Patriots (coached by Frank Capretta, assisted by Jeff Thistlethwaite and John Markovich) with 14. Anthony LoConte added 8. The Bulldogs speed and the Patriots turnovers proved the difference. “We just didn’t respond well to them,” said Pats coach Frank Capretta. “We knew that they were going to be a physical, athletic team and we didn’t match them. Good teams have to be able to respond when playing strong teams like them, and we just didn’t do it. What did I like on the court today? Not much, not much at all. I think we played good basketball for just six minutes in the third quarter. “We had 26 turnovers in the game — 26! We thought that if we could keep the turnovers to 12 or 13, we’d be in the game. Obviously, that didn’t happen.” Bulldogs coach Mohit Dayaram called it a sloppy win. “Being up by 21 at half-time and only ending the game up by (22) is not much a victory for me, knowing that we were the better team. We have to build better habits, because in later rounds, and tomorrow we face the No. 3 seed, if it’s a close game what are we going to do? “It was a good effort, but it could have been a little cleaner.” …………………………………………………… The 2nd-seeded Newmarket Dr. John M. Denison Huskies dumped the 12th-seeded Scarborough Jean Vanier Mavericks 60-44 after leading 12-4, 29-23 and 37-33 at the quarters. Brayden Gohn paced the Huskies with 17. Issack Egueh paced the Hawks (coached by Gary Monsour, assisted by Mona Le Blanc) with 21. John Lenz added 17, Emad Abedelmagid 15 and Wajdi Abumengal 13. Cale Mcdonald and Tyler Johnston each scored 15 to pace the Trojans (coached by Todd Andrew, assisted by Jeff Lowe). “We knew the first-round matchup wasn’t going to be easy.” North Park head coach Todd Andrew. “We just need to regroup, refocus. Hopefully, we’ll play some good basketball. There’s still a chance to move on. They (Hillcrest) jumped on us early. It’s tough to come back against a very fast, athletic team. Other than Cale, we didn’t shoot the ball well early and we turned the ball over way too much. Some of it was because of the pressure they put on us, some of it was because we didn’t make good decisions.” …………………………………………………… The 7th-seeded St. Catharines Governor Simcoe Redcoats edged the 13th-seeded Kingston Holy Cross Crusaders 51-48. Holy Cross led 15-13 after one quarter. Simcoe led 25-22 at the half. Holy Cross led 37-36 after three quarters. Brody Maracle led the Crusaders with 17. Tigh Chapman added 14. …………………………………………………… The 6th-seeded Windsor W.F. Herman Green Griffins clipped the 11th-seeded Mississauga Ascension of Our Lord Eagles 90-76 after leading 18-16, 45-33 and 69-53 at the quarters. Matt Barker led the Griffins with 27. Stefan Morrow paced the Broncos with 23. William Gonser added 11. Joseph Leo led the Patriots with 18. Anthony LoConte added 11. Morrow scored 9 in the first quarter, including a pair of dunks as the Broncos took command. “I was just trying to come out aggressive and get at my open looks, get my open jump shots,” Morrow said. “I wanted to push the tempo and play aggressive on defense and I think I did a pretty good job with that. As a team, we had our ups and downs. I think we need to be a little bit more consistent as the tournament goes on, but overall I’m pretty happy with the way our team played.” Patriots coach Frank Capretta said “except for the first six or seven minutes of the game, I thought it was pretty good. It took us a while to respond. I mean that’s the whole idea of playing in a tournament like this. At one point we had three Grade 10s on the court, so you want to teach them how to play at a certain level, which we didn’t do. We’ve never played in something like this. (Banting is) potentially a team that could win a medal this week. They beat the defending champs, who is the No. 3 seed, so we didn’t lose to a weak team. I think we just have to understand the level that we have to play at, that’s all.” …………………………………………………… The 2nd-seeded Newmarket Dr. John M. Denison Huskies crushed the 15th-seeded Lindsay I.E. Weldon Wildcats 62-43 after leading 24-17, 38-29 and 52-39 at the quarters. Kevin Pangos paced the Huskies with 22. Brayden Gohn added 17. Zachary Lockhart led the Wildcats with 11. Brett Zufelt added 27. Matthew Poirier led the Redcoats with 22. Nathanyl Awram added 14. “They shot the lights out. They hit 16 three-pointers. We were down 20-2 early and they made shots early and often,” Governor Simcoe coach Tom Grantis said. “Kevin when he dribbled penetrated, we couldn’t stop him. He made some very acrobatic baskets,” Grantis said. “But I was ecstatic with the team. Other than the fact it wasn’t a fun game for the opposing coach to endure, I was really proud of our guys. Even in the second half, we tried to make small goals and chip away and we did that.” Simcoe also included Matt Poirier and Lawrence McNeil.

In the semis, the top-seeded Whitby Anderson Raiders crushed the 4th-seeded Ottawa Hillcrest Hawks 78-52 after leading 13-10, 38-18 and 62-31 at the quarters.         In the final, the top-seeded Whitby Anderson Raiders edged the 2nd-seeded Newmarket Dr. John M. Denison Huskies 69-64 after leading 20-19, 38-35 and 52-45 at the quarters. Dyshawn Pierre led the Raiders with 26. Justin Edwards added 19 and Jacob Hutchcroft 12. Gonzaga University-bound Kevin Pangos paced the Huskies with 26. Brayden Gohn added 12 and Brett Zufelt 11. “Obviously, I’m disappointed in the result of the game,” said Pangos “But it was a good game. We both battled hard. We’ve played them before, but tonight (Anderson) just had that little bit extra. They pulled it out.” At the start, the squads exchanged baskets as the familiar opponents were feeling each other out. Thanks to a couple late quarter baskets from Brayden Gohn, the Huskies were up 19-17 as the clock ticked down, but Anderson’s Justin Edwards hit a three-pointer right at the buzzer to give the Raiders a 20-19 lead. Pangos was all over the second frame, hitting nine points and dishing passes from seemingly impossible angles, but the Huskies couldn’t overtake the Raiders. The Raiders widened the lead in the third due to two factors: They took out Pangos who was held to a three late in the quarter and the increasingly strong play of Anderson’s captain Dyshawn Pierre. The fourth quarter was really the Pangos-Pierre show as the two battled each other on the court and both kept putting up points, five for Pierre and seven for Pangos. The five that Pierre drained would prove to be the difference as the Raiders claimed the title. “This was a very, very tough game,” said Pierre. “This is a long, hard tournament and both teams were tired tonight. Kevin and the team really made us work for it tonight. There was a lot of energy on the court … and in the stands tonight. It was just a special game.”
