In the opening round, held in Newmarket: …………………………………………………… The top-seeded Brantford Assumption Lions defeated 11th-seeded Niagara Falls Westlane 64-57 as MacKenzie Milmine scored 32, Kent Squire Hill 18 and Mike Emmett 13. Lions coach Brian Jonker told the Brantford Expositor that “they’re not a true number 11 seed. I’ve seen the number 9 and 10 seeds and they’re much worse than this team.” Westlane led 17-15 after one quarter and 31-24 at the half on the shooting of Dario Varuna. But Assumption went on a 17-2 run to take a 48-39 lead after three quarters. Jonker said “Mac kept us in the game in the first half. We’re not big or telaented enough to blow people out. We have to wear people out and, at the end, they looked very tired. … (In the third quarter), our ball movement was excellent in that stretch. Every shot we got was a good look.” Milmine said “we kind of figured that since they were the 11th-seed, it would be a walkover. It took us until the second half to wake up and start playing how we wanted to play. We started moving the ball around a lot more.” Dario Varuna led Westlane with 16. …………………………………………………… The 6th-seeded Strathroy Saints defeated 16th-seeded Thornhill 69-61 as Andrew Wilken scored 23 and Jason Kerr 17. He’s being very aggressive and playing with a lot of confidence. He’s our leading scorer and our leading rebounder, a real terror for the other teams to deal with. He’s killing teams singlehandedly.” The Falcons led 17-5 after one quarter and by six at the half. “We’re rebounding very well, which is what’s saving us when we’re not shooting the ball well,” James added. “Our opponents are going one shot and out, one shot and out.” …………………………………………………… The 2nd-seeded Brampton St. Marguerite D’Youville Gators edged the 15th-seeded Sault Ste.         The 4th-seeded Sarnia St. Patrick’s Fighting Irish defeated the 5th-seeded Kingston Frontenac Falcons 51-45 as Andrew Wedemire scored 18. Mitch Leger paced Frontenac with 17 points and 11 boards. Dee Sterling added 10. Frontenac led 30-22 at the half. “We lost a war,” Falcons coach Suche James told the Kingston Whig-Standard. “Both teams are awfully tough and neither gave an inch. We did exactly what we wanted to do, but unfortunately we made a few mistakes near the end.” Wedemire hit a trey to give the Fighting Irish their first lead at 44-43 and they never again trailed. The Falcons misfired on a layup on the ensuing play and then were forced to foul.

“We missed a couple open shots and had a couple of weird turnovers, including an over-and-back call,” James said. “We also didn’t get any bounces. You need a lot of things to go right at OFSAA, including getting the right bounces when you need them. [Yesterday] we didn’t get them. … They were able to go eight and nine players deep and we weren’t able to do that, due to a lack of physical strength. As a result [St. Patrick’s] was fresher coming out of the half and a lot fresher going into the fourth quarter.” The Falcons (coached by James) also included Matt Beaubian, Travis Sandos, Craig Smith, Drew Rasmussen, David DeHoop, Brett McDonald, Allan Lahey, Meil Juas, Shan Pettit, Steve Crozier and Matt Sisson.

In the semis, the 4th-seeded Sarnia St. Patrick’s Fighting Irish stunned the top-seeded Brantford Assumption Lions 71-49 as Andrew Wedemire scored 26. Mike Emmett paced Assumption with 18. Mackenzie Milmine added 11, Tyler Grantham 10 and Kent Squire Hill 8. The Lions press was ineffective against the Fighting Irish, who led 20-17, 35-28 and 50-42 at the quarters on a late trey by Wedemire. I didn’t want to lose, so I had to step it up.” Emmett added that “it feels good when you know that as hard as you work, someone is working just as hard as you.” Lions coach Brian Jonker said “we just the lights out and 23 also had 22 assists on 31 field goals so we shared the ball really well. … We’re not big and not necessarily the most talented group but when you have a group that plays together as well as these guys do, it’s been a real pleasure.” Jose Araujo led the Gators with 31.

In the final, the 4th-seeded Sarnia St. Patrick’s Fighting Irish defeated the 3rd-seeded Toronto Emery Eagles 68-63 as Andrew Wedemire scored 23. Panyon Makur led the Eagles with 17. St. Patrick’s led by as many as 19 in the second half.
