Toronto Secondary Schools Athletic Association voted to “forego” participation in the provincials. Coach Hal Brown of North Toronto High, whose team won the TSSAA title, called it a “big disappointment.” Toronto president Bud Auburn says “they wanted two teams from the area in which the series is being played and someone had to drop out. We discussed it and volunteered to be it for this year.”

In the WOSSA final, the Windsor Assumption Purple Raiders dispatched the London H.B. Beal Raiders 51-41 as Bob Gardner scored 21, Ambrose Gardner 10, Mike Semancik 9, John Upham 6, McClory 4 and Morris 1. Bill Woloshyn led Beal with 14. In the quarterfinals, held in Sudbury, the Windsor Assumption Purple Raiders defeated the Niagara Falls Stamford CI Hornets 55-50 by freezing the ball for five minutes in the final quarter. Bob Gardner led the Purple Raiders with 22. Ambrose Gardner added 14, Jim McClory 7, Mike Semancik 6, John Upham 4 and Morris 2. The Purple Raiders led 18-15, 27-25 and 43-41 at the quarters. Ken Kilrea led the Hornets with 16. Ed Taylor added 15, Ken Rysdale 9, Lou Borean 7 and Jim Myer 3. The Hornets (coach John Lees, manager Barry Crump, manager Bob Erwin) also included Fred Reece, Barry Reid, George Lalicich, Tom Newton and Jim Porter.

The Toronto Runnymede Redmen dispatched the Kitchener Eastwood Rebels 46-30. The Rebels included Mike Schertzer, Terry Harley, Bill McNaughton, Don Buie, Jim Israel, Bruce Steifelmeyer, George Chris, Heinbuch, Wohlgemuth, Cruickshank, Bailey and Hudson.

The Sudbury High North Stars clocked the Oshawa Central Chiefs 58-41.

In the last quarterfinal, the Sudbury High North Stars clipped the Ottawa Lisgar Lords 61-45. The Lords (coached by Bernie Black and managed by Dave Corrigan and George Brazier) included Les Mosion, Jim Weir, Richard Hutchings, Derek Callan, Brian D’Arcy, John Simpson, Earl Morrison, John McAskin, Bob Hum and Grant Cawsey.

In the semis, the Windsor Assumption Purple Raiders defeated the Toronto Runnymede Redmen 53-50 on a field goal and a free throw by John Upham late in the game. Upham’s bucket broke a 48-48 tie. Bob Gardner paced the Purple Raiders with 20. John Upham added 11, Mike Semancik 8, Ambrose Gardner 6, MCclory 6 and Morris 2. Ross May paced Runnymede with 13. Bob Ecclestone added 12, Ted Clarke 10, Little 8 and Condlin 7.

In the other semi, the Sudbury High North Stars defeated the Sudbury St. Charles Cardinals 52-48.

In the final, the Windsor Assumption Purple Raiders defeated the Sudbury High North Stars 60-55. Windsor Assumption was (12-1) entering the tourney. Sudbury led early 14-10. The game was tied at 30 at half and Assumption led 44-40 at the three-quarter mark. An Ambrose Gardner field goal and a pair of free throws by Mike Semancik boosted the lead to 8 at start of the second half. But Sudbury pulled back to within one 53-52 with three minutes to go. Windsor stalled for 90 seconds and then Jim McClory hit a three-point play. Two free throws by Mike Semancik with 2:11 to play sealed the victory. Ambrose Gardner late hit an insurance bucket with seven seconds to go. Windsor shot 22-54 from floor and 16-23 from line. Sudbury shot 21-53 from floor and 13-20 from line. Bob Gardner paced Assumption with 20. Mike Semancik added 16, John Upham 9, Ambrose Gardner 7, John Upham 4 and John Morris 4. Six-seven post Gary Silc paced Sudbury with 21. John Costigan added 14, Barry Davidson 8, Jarrett 6, Ross 4 and Rose 2.
