In the final, the London Sir Adam Beck Spartans thrashed the Toronto East York Huskies 87-32 by dominating the boards, defending like demons and shooting like Olympic marksmen. But the Spartans switched to a press in the second quarter, and outscored the Huskies by 14-6, 29-7 and 10-8 in the successive three quarters to coast to the easy win. Spartans coach Roger Macauley told the Toronto Star that “I get the players into the best physical condition possible and then we run the feet off the opposition. I don’t bother about fancy plays or systems – they won’t do you any good if the players aren’t in top condition. I run the players a lot, at every practice I run them until they get tired. Then we have a short shooting session, a small scrimmage and that’s our practice. Running and shooting, that’s our main diet. Once the players are in condition, I concentrate on shooting. Not the usual type of shooting where a player has to crash through a defence to get a shot at the basket but the long-range stuff where they stand back and let go. One of the first things I teach them is how to shoot with one hand from outside the opposition’s defence zone.” The win was the Spartans 27th consecutive. Spartan post Barry Howson led all scorers with 26, including 8-9 from the line, while guard Brian Laird added 23, including 13-15 free throws.
