The province resurrected its provincial playoffs, splitting itself into four regions, with the champs of each region invited to Toronto’s Hart House for the finals, marking the first time in five years that an actual all-Ontario final tournament is held. The victor would be awarded the new Eaton Trophy, emblematic of Ontario high school cage supremacy. Hart House became notorious for producing odd results through the years because it was 22 feet short and 10 feet narrower than a regulation court.

Johnny Goodearle scored 11 to paced Sudbury High (coached by Joe Costigan). Querney added 7, L Beaton 6, Ken Flake 5, D Crang 4 and D Graham 2, while Hinds and J Campbell were scoreless. Lou Lukenda led Sault Collegiate with 10. Kemp Fisher added 9, Nichols 6, W Lowe 5, R Barnes 4 and Ray Yakasovich 1, while Piper, Harry, H Lapointe and Klym were scoreless. In the provincial semis, the Toronto Runnymede Redmen thumped Merritton 48-35 as track star Bill Gough scored 22. Runnymede hit the first bucket and never trailed, although Merritton rallied to knot the score at 25 mid-way through the second half. Jim McLachlin added 8, Al Walker 7, Wrigglesworth 4, Robinson 2, Bruce Coulter 0, Grant 0, Stone 0, Tilker 0 and Whalen 0 for the Redmen. Merritton saw both its stars, Coulter and Robinson foul out shortly after the start of the second half. Warren McNaughton paced Merritton with 13. McNicol added 8, Cosgroves 7, Collings 5, McVicar 5, O’Flaherty 0, Davidson 0, Galbriath 0, Summers 0 and Pugliese 0.
In the other semi, the Windsor Patterson Panthers defeated the Sudbury High North Stars 51-45. The match was tight until the final minutes when Willie Greenwood hit a free throw to give Patterson a 46-45 lead. After Doug Wigle and Bob Simpson added buckets and Greenwood hit another free throw, it marked a 6-0 run to close out the victory. Greenwood finished with 11, Harry Wade 11, Doug Wigle 10, Bob Simpson 8, Commuzzi 7, Tom Tomolillo 4, Stewart 0, Storey 0, Salies 0 and Norray 0. Johnny Goodearle paced Sudbury (coached by Joe Costigan) with 18. Ken Flake added 15, W Reid 5, Romaniuk 2, D Crang 2, Benton 2, Allan Querney 2, Ozzie Hinds 0, Woods 0 and D Graham 0.
In the final, the Windsor Patterson Panthers rallied to nip the Toronto Runnymede Redmen 47-46. With a minute to play, Patterson trailed 44-41 but Bob Simpson cut the margin to one with a bucket in the post. With 30 seconds to play, Runnymede’s Bill Gough responded with a hoop but Harry Wade hit four of his 27 points in the final seconds to pull out the win for Windsor, including the winning bucket on an offensive tip-in with one minute to play. Runnymede’s Jim Coulter missed a free throw with 15 seconds to play that would have forced overtime. Bob Simpson added 6 for the Panthers, Willie Greenwood 5, Tom Tomolillo 5, Matt Cocomazzi 3 and Doug Wigle 1, while Stewart, Storey, Norray and Soltes were scoreless. Bruce Coulter paced Runnymede with 14. Bill Gough added 13, Jim MacLachlin 8, Robinson 5, Al Walker 4 and Wigglesworth 2, while Stone, Grant, Fitzgibbon and Whalen were scoreless.
