The 7th-seeded E.S. Paincourt Patriotes stunned the 2nd-seeded Sault Ste. Marie White Pines Collegiate & Vocational Wolverines 45-43. The Patriotes led 13-12 after one quarter. The score was knotted at 25 at the half. The Wolverines led 38-34 after three quarters but the Patriotes closed out the affair with an 11-5 run. A trey at the buzzer by Wolverine Ally Frayne rimmed the hoop. Emily Pepper paced the Patriotes with 17. Adriane Bruni led the Wolverines with 17. Keirstin Olar added 11. “I feel we tried really hard and we gave it everything we had,” Bruni told the Sault Star. “We battled down to the last second.” Wolverines coach Josh Pallot said “we played really well, but we just didn’t hit our shots. We feel we were good enough to make it to the gold-medal game. I think Pain Court is headed for the finals. … They were in a zone (defence), we were missing shots and they were also missing shots. But then they hit some big three-pointers. It also really hurt us when Adriane Bruni fouled out.” Bruni fouled out with 2:30 to play. “We were down by seven points twice and we came back,” Pallot added. “It’s a tough loss but we’re still very proud of where we finished. To be in the top eight in the province is impressive.” Keirstin Olar said “we fought hard. It’s pretty tough to lose, but it was a good game. We played very well, we just couldn’t hit shots when we needed to.” Bruni said “I couldn’t be prouder of how we played and couldn’t be prouder to be a member of this team. We’re disappointed, but we know we tried our hardest.” The Wolverines (coached by Josh Pallot) also included Kiersten Olar, Taylor Kinnunen, Katie Elliott, Kate Trotter, Olivia Bruni.

In the final, the top-seeded Welland E.S. Jean-Vanier Lynx clubbed the 7th-seeded host E.S. Paincourt Patriotes 42-19 after leading 13-3, 23-10 and 32-16 at the quarters. “It feels amazing,” Lynx point guard Brooke Murdoch said. “All the hard work we put into it, it shows.” Alex Spadaro paced the Lynx with 16. Sarah Dillon added 11 and Brooke Murdoch 7. Spadaro also nabbed 12 boards. Krystine Goodison led the Patriotes with 6. Cassandra Faubert added 5, Brooke Marchand 4 and Emily Pepper 4. “They filled the stands quite a bit, so we had to homecourt killers again,” said Lynx coach Tara Poulin. Spadaro hit four early buckets as the Lynx took command. “Without Alex and Sarah’s scoring, we don’t win games. Without Brooke’s defence, we also don’t win games. But without everybody contributing, we don’t OFSAA,” Poulin added. “it’s definitely the whole package with this team.” Paincourt coach Mike Schinkelshoek said “the girls just played with a lot of heart. They were relaxed which we hoped they were going to be.” Patriotes forward Brooke Marchand told the Chatham Daily News that “we achieved our goal with the silver. We’re happy with the silver. It’s a great feeling. We lost to last year’s OFSAA champs. If we had to lose to anyone, we lost to an amazing team. We played our hearts out.” The Patriotes trailed by only six early in the third quarter, but the Lynx silenced the hometown fans with a 12-0 run for a 30-12 lead entering the fourth. “We knew we had to play our absolute best to compete with them,” Marchand said. “We did what we could. We still played really well.” Faubert added that “we dreamed about it. We were talking about it, but we honestly had no idea. The coaches told us what we needed to do and we did it, and we got this far.” Patriotes coach Mike Schinkelshoek said “the girls just played with a lot of heart. Their heart came out. They were relaxed, which we hoped they were going to be. There were a couple games where the other team was tight and nervous, and we took advantage of that.”
