Ridley coach Dave Whitty called LeAndrea Armbrister as his team’s Hulk Hogan. Her penchant for strong defence and tenacious rebounding is also why the 17-year-old native of the Bahamas has the nickname Boxer. “I can’t tell you why,” she laughed. “It’s just a name that I got from home when I was in high school. It’s because I’m tough.” Her toughness was on display as the Tigers dispatched Elmwood, holding the Eagles without a field goal for more than 20 minutes. “(My father) taught me to stay strong in the paint and there would be opportunities for me to score,” Armbrister said. “She’s a hard-working kid. She’s blossoming as a student and an athlete,” Whitty said. Armbrister came to Ridley College in Grade 11 after a coach back home told her about the school. “I like the educational system and I like the sports here,” she said. Ridley cut back on its turnovers but struggled with free throws, going 3-for-16. Ainsley Camroux-Peacock paced the Tigers with 21. Franziska Streit added 8, LeAndrea Armbrister 7, Laura Voigtlander 6 and Emma Rigg 1, while Chelsea English, Leonie Vreden and Madison Clarke were scoreless. Megan Singh paced the Eagles with 10. Derbyshire. …………………………………………………… The 6th-seeded Welland Ecole Secondaire Jean Vanier Lynx stomped the 11th-seeded Walkerton Fighting Farmers 44-17 after leading 11-4, 24-9 and 34-17 at the quarters. The Lynx broke to an 11-0 lead. Coach Tricia Poulin said the Farmers’ strategy for the team was simple: start the game hard while messing with the strategy of their opponents. “We wanted to tell them that we’re shutting the door closed on whatever they’re going to. By getting the energy going it’s easier to keep the energy flowing throughout the rest of the game.” Poulin said the Lynx were able to pull off a strong lead because the strategy was to utilize every player on the bench on the court. Rotating the players on and off the court keeps the players fresh and well rested. “All the girls played the roles exactly as they were supposed to,” Poulin said. Sarah Dillon paced the Lynx with 12. Melanie Tanguay added 10, Brooke-Lyn Murdoch 8, Dallas Tanguay 6, Katelyn Fontaine 4, Alysha Fontaine 2 and Chelsea Leveille 2, while Robyn Molhar, Tori Badaway, Diandra Lisicky, Zhane Hamilton and Nadine Oubayan were scoreless. The Griffons were coached by Justin Brogden, assisted by R. Dubuc and J.A. Bergeron. Larissa Rivard got hot in the second quarter to rally the Griffons but the Tigers took command in the second half. “The best way to say it is sometimes baskets go in and sometimes they don’t,” Griffons coach Justin Brogden said. “Our first two games, I told the girls we can’t win this title without four good quarters every game and we had four good quarters in that game but the ball wasn’t dropping. We ran our offence correctly and we were taking the right shots, but the ball doesn’t go in sometimes and that’s basketball. … My role players stepped up huge that game and it wasn’t the Emily Tymchuk show. We were prepared because we knew they were going to defend to shut her down, but at the end of the day if the ball doesn’t drop you can’t win. … We put three NOSSA and OFSAA banners on the wall in the last three years, so there is lots to be proud of. I can’t say enough about these kids. They held their heads high after that loss and we won with dignity all year and we lost with dignity. They played with class and passion and respect the game and left it all on the floor every game of the season, so there’s not much more I could ask for.”

In the bronze medal match, the top-seeded Elgin Rideau District Lions edged the 2nd-seeded Kemptville North Grenville Knights 50-47 after leading 15-9, 26-21 and 39-31 at the quarters. “It was a very competitive OFSAA,” Lions coach Ron Stenzl told the Kingston Whig-Standard. “One observation is I think there’s a shift of power to the Golden Horseshoe. Eastern Ontario has historically had great success at single-A OFSAA, but I think the road is going to get tougher and tougher. With the quality of teams and the quality of club programs (in that area of the province), it’s going to be tough (to beat them).” After the loss in the semi, “it was a very difficult game for our kids to get motivated for. They were still grieving the loss, so I give our kids a lot of credit. It was a real close, real competitive game and it was a nice way to finish the season.” Kyla Doombas paced the Lions with 15 on 6-10 from the floor, 3-8 from the line and 10 boards.         In the final, 6th-seeded Welland Ecole Secondaire Jean Vanier Lynx clubbed the 4th-seeded St. Catharines Ridley College Tigers 36-23. The Lynx led 10-8 after one quarter. The Tigers led 14-12 at the half but the Lynx rallied to a 19-16 lead after three quarters. “We had to tame (Tigers top scorer) Ainsley Camroux-Peacock because she finds a way to score,” Lynx coach Tara Poulin said. “I put my best defender, Brooke-Lyn Murdoch, on her and it made her (Murdoch) offensively struggle, but defensively because of what she (Murdoch) did to Camroux-Peacock, we won the game.” Although Camroux-Peacock still scored a game-high 12 points and snagged a game-high nine rebounds, the Lynx defence held her to 6-for-15 (40%) from the floor, which included 0-for-5 from the three-point line. “Our key was to not let No. 20 (Camroux-Peacock) get the ball and shoot the three,” said 17-year-old Lynx guard Melanie Tanguay, who scored 11 points and grabbed six rebounds. “We truly didn’t believe we should be ranked sixth and we came out to show everyone that the rankings were wrong. It is amazing to win because we are the first basketball team in the history of Jean Vanier to win OFSAA, and there is no feeling like this.” The Tigers led 14-12 at halftime, but the Lynx found their stride in the second half and outscored their opponents 24-9 with superb free-throw shooting by Sarah Dillon (5-for-5) and excellent leadership by Tanguay. “(Tanguay’s) leadership was, hands down, the reason we got to OFSAA and the reason we beat the best teams,” Poulin said. “No matter what she struggles through personally, Melanie comes onto the basketball court and leads the team. It is awesome to win and these girls deserve it so much. We have had our ups and downs with these girls since Grade 9 and we always come together because we’re family now.” Ridley coach Dave Whitty said “we were one game short of our goal. We missed a lot of easy shots early and if we could have taken care of business more in the first half, it wouldn’t have caught up to us in the second half.” Sarah Dillon paced the Lynx with 11 on 2-5 from the arc, 5-5 from the line and 5 boards. Melanie Tanguay added 11 on 2-5 from the floor, 1-2 from the arc, 4-8 from the line and 6 boards. Katelyn Fontaine notched 8 on 4-7 from the floor. Alysha Fontaine added 4 and Tori Badawey 2, while Robyn Molhar, Brooke-Lyn Murdoch, Chelsea Leveille, Diandra Lisicky, Dallas Tanguay, Zhane Hamilton and Nadine Oubayan were scoreless.
